its really not that simple to stop a fire, unfortunately

this is why fire prevention is so important
Couldn't they have water bombed it?
no, it could potentially break the structure, the weight of the water could do a lot of harm, keep in mind that it's a very old cathedral
this is a good point too.  i think they are weighing up the losses ...   ie the structure, the art inside, what manpower they have, etc

the whole thing is tragic

Yeah, the news in Norway said that the firemen had considered to use helicopters to pour water over it, but that it could do more harm than good, e.g. damage the structure of the towers or break anything so yeah, it's not worth the risk

"We can now say that the structure of the Notre-Dame has been saved from total destruction".

'The worst has been avoided'
Speaking at the scene in Paris, President Macron called the fire a "terrible tragedy", but added that the worst had been avoided.
He said he planned to launch a fundraising campaign to renovate the cathedral.
"We will rebuild Notre-Dame."

'Structure saved' says Interior Ministry
French Deputy Interior Minister Laurent Nunez has announced that the fire has "decreased in intensity" and "the structure of the building is saved, including the north tower."

ofc they can renovate it, but it won't be the same. the history is gone, the work made many hundreds of years ago is gone.

This is tragic but I’m trying to remember my notre dame history (I’ve had to do research for hunchback of notre dame) because I feel like it’s been destroyed before? Which gives hope that it will indeed be rebuilt again

I'm so happy the fire is stopped and most of the art and important artifacts are saved. God bless.
