plastic surgery is not empowering

but that doesn't mean that you can't get it

i think a suspicious trend lately has been that people think getting plastic surgery is an empowering thing, and it's being marketed as 'self-love' while it's anything but that. you can't advocate self-love and get plastic surgery, you can't be body positive and get plastic surgery.

plastic surgery (and makeup to a certain extent) is an industry that thrives on the insecurities of people. they earn money from the beauty standards that are upheld in the world. plastic surgery is a predatory industry that has made people believe that if you don't like how you look, you can just get under the knife and change it.

it's not empowering, it's a marketing scheme.

what do you guys think? can you advocate self-love and have plastic surgery?

also it's not really about whether you should get plastic surgery or not, @mistyxq  put this very well:

"I think I get why this swayed away from the point you were making. You're talking about it from the perspective of people earning tons of money from it, they're actively telling society that plastic surgery will take insecurities away. And while changing some details could reduce insecurity, it's different if you're generally an insecure person, personality wise. And people getting those messages from the people earning money from it might not be able to tell the difference and will be caught in a loop feeling worse every time because they're still insecure.

It's not about people changing something about themselves to feel more like themselves, it's about how everyone is told how you will become greater and better (empowering) if you pay the money and go under the knife, when at best it only reduces anxiety about a certain thing or two, and at worst you'll lose all your money to plastic surgery addiction.

agreed

but it's almost impossible to not have any insecurities, so I wouldn't judge anyone who goes under the knife. and who knows, it might be 1 or 2 things about them that really sticks out and draws attention to them in a bad way, I don't think getting plastic surgery just about that 1 or 2 things is necessarily bad. The bad thing is if it becomes an addiction, they keep pointing out new things to change etc. like that jimin wannabe

hahahah not the jimin guy

but no, i support people who want to get a surgery done, it's their body their choice. i just find it dangerous that it's being marketed as 'empowering' and 'taking control' while it's anything but that

i think what people wanna do to themselves is their choice and not every choice one makes has to be about morality

If someone dislikes a part of their body and chooses to get surgery to fix it thats their own business, I wouldn't consider them any less of an advocate for self-love or confidence.

You feel people should love how they were made and not make any changes?

no def not, but that's not necessarily the point im trying to make
i think its related tho
like on one hand i get it, on the other its just a body yakno. i dont see why the body has to be this static thing and if u change it through surgery, its because u dont love yourself or whatever. we change our bodies all the time, through age, through exercise, through hair cuts and dyeing and tattoos and piercings. i dont think rhinoplasty or a boob job suddenly changes the game when ur making a choice for yourself

i feel that if people preach self-love (love how they were made and not make any changes) then plastic surgery isn't that, and you can't preach self-love, or at least, not authentically

i still feel they're different. it's a different message to send when you say 'exercise if you want that dream body' and 'get plastic surgery if you want that dream body'
