and then we have gendo, the character we're actually supposed to hate yet i can't hate him. he's lived his life and now is haunted by his past. he knows he's a bad father, and because of that he isolates himself from shinji, and shinji sees this as his father not caring for him. in the end, he's just a human who wants to feel love again.

i think in a way too though- the creator was very much screaming at himself  "you're worth it" and maybe it was just by chance that the rest of us got to hear that message too. he- Anno tells a story about being so depressed once that his apartment building was on fire and he didn't even want to get out of bed then. like his world was ending and falling apart around him and he couldn't even move. he's come a long way, too. his show and he himself are an inspiration. he directs all the godzilla movies in japan now- he's respected as an artist and living his dreams.

and i really respect asuka for being so gung ho at the end, in some way, our courage is defined by our actions when we know we're going to fail. even when the end result is going to be the same, even when we're just a candle in the wind, existence is still meaningful.

evangelion is about despair and it's also about hope. watching evangelion, processing evangelion, was  a part of my initial recovery from suicidal depression. when i feel i'm losing hope- i always watch end of evangelion. i watch asuka fight. i watch her continue to fight after it's hopeless- after she must know she's lost already and she keeps reaching out, 'i'll kill you, i'll kill you' she doesn't give up as she's dying. after everything she had been through she finds strength within her to continue to fight.

i think my favorite track on the soundtrack is thanatos.  idk it's hard for me to pick.
