i think in a way too though- the creator was very much screaming at himself  "you're worth it" and maybe it was just by chance that the rest of us got to hear that message too. he- Anno tells a story about being so depressed once that his apartment building was on fire and he didn't even want to get out of bed then. like his world was ending and falling apart around him and he couldn't even move. he's come a long way, too. his show and he himself are an inspiration. he directs all the godzilla movies in japan now- he's respected as an artist and living his dreams.
im so glad he came out on top. for all he cares, he could've made the end in a way that screamed 'you're worthless!' but he didn't. he was going through depression and still wanted to tell his audience that even if they hated themselves, they could learn to love themselves. and it pains my heart that he got so much hate for the original ending, it must have gutted him to see all that pure hate thrown at him after sending out a message like that.

i first saw evangelion fifteen years ago and it still changes my heart with each rewatch.

as i got older i found myself identifying more with misato and ritsuko more. like when  i was younger i really identified with shinji and asuka and i still do but i've begun to identify with the older generation. i wonder if as i age someday maybe i'll see parts of myself in gendo or fuyutski.
that's actually also an interesting way of looking at it, the three generations describe us in different stages of life. shinji, rei and asuka are our younger selves. when we're young we're at our most vulnerable, we are impressionable, we want to be seen by others, to be accepted, and we don't yet really understand why we're in this situation.

then misato, ritsuko and kaji are our adolescent versions. part of our story has already been told, and we've gone through stuff that shape our morals. misato works for NERV because she wants to avenge her father's death. she made mistakes in her past and she's trying to amend them, but she's still unsure whether she made the right decisions. kaji accepts his fate and understands that it is necessary if he wants to live for what he believes in. and ritsuko's arc with her mother was very poignant, and she's very much in conflict with her feelings towards gendo.

and then we have gendo, the character we're actually supposed to hate yet i can't hate him. he's lived his life and now is haunted by his past. he knows he's a bad father, and because of that he isolates himself from shinji, and shinji sees this as his father not caring for him. in the end, he's just a human who wants to feel love again.

this is a great article.

evangelion is about despair and it's also about hope. watching evangelion, processing evangelion, was  a part of my initial recovery from suicidal depression. when i feel i'm losing hope- i always watch end of evangelion. i watch asuka fight. i watch her continue to fight after it's hopeless- after she must know she's lost already and she keeps reaching out, 'i'll kill you, i'll kill you' she doesn't give up as she's dying. after everything she had been through she finds strength within her to continue to fight.

i think my favorite track on the soundtrack is thanatos.  idk it's hard for me to pick.
thank you  and im glad that evangelion helped you in such a positive way. i also feel that despite all the brutality, evangelion's kind of uplifting. shinji in the end finally accepts himself and say 'my life is worth living here!' after all that's happened was SO powerful ugh. the creator was practically screaming to us YOU'RE WORTH IT.

and i really respect asuka for being so gung ho at the end, in some way, our courage is defined by our actions when we know we're going to fail. even when the end result is going to be the same, even when we're just a candle in the wind, existence is still meaningful.
