and yes i pulled the other yarn through the crochet of the yarn i was using. you can barely see it at all. but i also accidentally used a different gauge than what the pattern said so the result became much smaller and "compact" than anticipated, but i think it helped to make a cleaner look and not being able to see the hidden yarn thread if that makes sense

it feels very solid actually and pulling the yarn through definitely makes the difference. i did it the way that whenever it was time to change color i would pull the yarn and tighten it. kinda hard to explain but i can recommend watching someone on youtube crocheting checkers, helped me a lot. good luck!!
