Yeah I get what you mean. Maybe it's a bit of a forum culture thing as well? I remember that having a cold and standoffish language was quite common on gSm too. I find that "smartness" comes across regardless of language use, but also - there is no need to flaunt ~intelligence~ in every post anyway. I find myself drawn to people who just relay good vibes

also long live 'XD', I wouldn't know how to live without you
HAhahaah  oh yeeeah
my employer, who is a senior professor with a phd and a ton of published articles, uses 'XD' all the time and I think that is fantastic

It's the best smiley. It obviously doesn't mean "I'm laughing my ass off" but it means more like... "don't take this too seriously" or "I'm finding this funny" but it's more sincere than lol.
Lol very quickly became a sarcastic thing to say... at least in my age group and people around me.

Smiley language and things like that fascinates me. It's such a understood thing if you're on the internet a lot. Like it's own language. But it has "dialects" in different groups, especially age groups. You can tell a lot by what smileys someone uses.

And I find it very useful bc you can tell when I'm in a "philosophic" or "serious" mode. Or "serious but not too serious" mode. Adding a  XD and you know I'm not too serious.

I might still wanna say something serious, but it signals that I might be wrong or that it's just an opinion or that it's somehow not set in stone. More floaty. Easygoing.

agreed! internet subcultures are super cool I think. I'd love to see (or do) more research on them
