Leaving love behind
By Hira____________________________________

Another wave gently pushes upon my bare feet as the sun glides behind the horizon. I don’t
notice the coldness of the saltwater nor of the stone I’m sitting on, because the
only think I can think of is the deafening pounding of my heart as she slowly emerges
from the sea. She always looks so sad, and it makes me just want to hold her
tighter, but as she makes her way over to me she gives me a smile. “Hey there,
you made it” I say trying to sound calm as I remove a wild strand of light
purple hair from her face. She blushes slightly and even more so when I kiss
her. “I wouldn’t miss seeing you… for a last time” she says, the last part almost
as a distant whisper. “Oh, I almost forgot” she reaches to her golden headpiece,
she always wears, and removes a pink seashell, I honestly hadn’t notices was
there. She takes my hands and puts the seashell into them. “It’s so pretty” I
say, really not looking as much at the shell as much as I’m looking at the sea
witch before me. She laughs as she catches my eyes, “Yeah… I thought you’d like
it as, as a reminder of me” her laughter turns a little less cheerful. “I could
never forget you”, I squeeze her hand that still lingers in mine, “I mean it’s
no so often you get to fall in love with a girl, with eight stunning, purple arms”
she rolls her eyes “move over”. And as I do so, she places herself next to me. We
don’t look at each other or say anything in a long time. The silence, however,
is not uncomfortable nor is it weird. But as we sit there watching the skies
changing into its nigh color, we share among us a string of unspoken words, which
need no expressing or explaining. My heart is heavy with sadness. I have to
leave her, I can’t stay her, not even for her, even though I told myself so
many time that it wouldn’t be necessary. Nevertheless, I have to let her go,
let myself go. I look over at her, warm tears in my eyes, only to find that she
already is looking at me. “You know, the sea is almost endless, and where one
sea stops another begins” she removes a wayward tear from my cheekbone. “I
could always just.. you know find you” she smiles her sad smile. “I don’t think
that’ll be a good idea” I whisper afraid that if I speak any louder, all the
tears will fall. She looks down “I know”. A pause and she suddenly looks up, “but
just promise me that you’ll keep the seashell with you. You see, I’ve hexed it,
so when you hold it near your heart,” she takes my hand with the shell in it,
and put it close to my chest “can you fell that?” a warmth emanates from the
pink little shell and I hear a faint voice singing, her voice, but it also
comes from the shell. I smile a smile of surprise up at her. “that’s…” I don’t
know what to say, but the look on her face tells me that she knows. Somehow she
always know, I never really have to say anything, and still she knows how I feel,
what I want to say, like no one ever have. “I promise” I finally say. In return
she kisses me, and I kiss her back. It’s a kiss of sad passion, filled with
remorse over all the time we never will have. It’s a kiss of beautiful melancholia.
As we draw away from each other we both have tears streaming silently from our
eyes. “I, I think… I think it’s time” I say trailing of at the end. “Yeah I
know… ” there’s a long pause. “I love you” she says in an almost clear voice,
trying to hide the blue undertone away. “And I love you” I say, doing a terrible
job hiding my sadness. “And I always will”, she says right before she leaps
into the water and swims away, without looking back.
Here I’m sitting, on a cold, wet stone at the shoreline at dusk. My heart is
somehow heavy with sadness and relived at the same time. Even though I know it’s
time to leave, I sit here not wanting to move, because if I leave, it’ll mean
that it’s all over, and I will have to live with no seeing her ever again.
I have always loved the sea, the sound of the waves hitting the sore, the fresh
air, the atmosphere of mystique and the sense of freedom and adventure.
However, I had never in my wildest dreams imagined that I would fall in love
with a creature from the deep blue water. And suddenly everything I used to love
about this place, now just reminds me of a longing of a lover I will never be
able to reach. Mystique turns to melancholia, freedom into sadness  and adventure into memories I will never forget.

...

The soothing sound of the waves got louder and louder as she noticed the cold water reaching her toes. The sand she was laying in hugged her body softly while the beaming sun kept her warm.
She opened her eyes and managed to abruptly get up to a seated position. And, as she was about to get herself back to the ocean to save her from drying out, she noticed her own legs. There were no tentacles drying out in the sunshine, but human legs. Her heart was beating so hard it almost hurt. What happened? The last thing she remembered was how happy she had felt swimming around picking seashells with her friends. Her seaweed bag had been full of pink seashells; her favourite colour. The memory made her smile. It had been a perfect day, almost so perfect that if felt like a dream...

She took a deep breath and looked at the beach around her. She was all alone. Then, as her whole life started flashing through her mind, she realised the awful truth. In every breath she took, she could feel her sore throat, and remembered her own screams as the ship was going under in the extreme storm. How long had she been unconscious? She quickly took to her chest to find a necklace she could not remember having put on. She lifted the pendant up, just to see the pink seashell glittering in the sun.

She was born into the world innocent and pure, encased in a bubble in a secluded crevice. She could sense her mother and it filled her will a deep love--her mother had brought all these children into the world, and would protect them with her life. Each day she fanned the water around them, creating a gentle current. As the children swayed, small Salome revelled in the love that washed over them all. She could not see her mother yet, but could sense her presence; her warmth shrouded them all in a swell.

She was the first of the clutch to open their eyes, and what she saw amazed her. Still shielded from the world in her bubble, she saw her mother for the first time. Her long, golden tresses swayed with the oceans undulation, her purple tentacles gently brushed each sachet even as she slept. As if she could sense eyes on her, she awoke with a start. After canvassing around their dwelling, she returned to find Salome watching her with absolute love and devotion. Merinda, as she had been named by her mother before her, wept at the sight of her daughter; she was overwhelmed by love and relief, but also painfully aware of what this forebode.

As the other children developed, Merinda spent time with each. There were thousands, and she gave each of them a name and increased the sizes of their bubbles. With the newfound space, the children danced and played, mimicking their mothers actions as she guided them as best as she could to their new lives. She spent lots of time with Salome, and taught her additional matters--how to care for her siblings, the ways of the ocean, matters of the heart.

“Salome,” she said one evening, as the dusk fell over the entire ocean. The current had lulled her siblings into rest. “No matter what happens, you must always go forward.” Salome nodded in enthusiasm. “You must never look back, the future only exists when you continue forward.”

It was in the deepest night that it came. One moment it was warm, and the next it was not--the change stirred Salome from slumber. Immediately, she could sense that something was wrong. Horribly, painfully wrong. She could no longer feel her mother’s warmth, and in the dark could not see her. Agitated, she paced in her bubble, turning in circles. With no other choice, she pressed herself against the bubble’s wall, trying with all her might to break free. She used her tentacles to press at various points, and eventually broke through. As she searched their home, she found her mother. She had pressed herself tightly against the entrance, and now laid there in eternal sleep, her body limp and cold. Salome tried to rouse her, but only a single tentacle stirred--it pressed itself against her forehead, then dropped back down. Salome had finally known her mother’s embrace, but would never feel it again.

Salome wept through the night, wrapping herself in her mother’s arms. She knew as dawn came she would have to manage her siblings, and to guide them just as her mother had. As the cold eddy washed over her, Salome slept--alone, afraid, but always striving ahead.

based on how irl octopuses care for their young: they starve themselves while caring for their brood, and die just as the eggs hatch.

I stood on the pier. I had thought so much lately. You know all kinds of things. Or, well, it’s more likely you don’t know but it’s doesn’t matter. The thing was that I had been thinking so much that I started getting tired about it. I wanted to get rid of it. So, I jumped. Water surrounded me so gently and washed away my mind.

I was about to close my eyes but suddenly I felt something twisting around my limbs. Before I even noticed that something was actually someone, it pulled me closer to themselves. And there they were, looking at me so curiously with kind looking, light colored eyes. I stared at that humanlike creature straight back but with a puzzled face. They looked like a human mostly but instead of legs they had beautiful pale pink tentacles. They were… I think they were a mermaid… but with tentacles. Half human, half octopus. They had lovely light pink eyelashes and the same colored long floating hair. Oh, and I think they were wearing golden hair jewelry.

My head felt fuzzy and my body lost its strength. That creature touched my face with their hands and tentacles. I think they looked worried but maybe it was just my imagination. Anyway, I felt so tranquil. I was ready to fell for eternal dream all by myself, but this was a nice way to do it as well. The creature with me was so beautiful and I was so lucky to see something like that before I eventually closed my eyes.

Frozen Pearls

She wanted most to see so far
that landscapes shaped the so bizarre,
but what she heard were bitter lies,
so frozen pearls became her eyes.

Longing for a different space,
her concentration burst her mind.
Frozen pearls inducing daze,
little Sika's clearly blind.

Clear as water, sees no more,
Sika's anchor's on the floor.
Dreams of landscapes turn to gore,
with frozen pearls she sees no shore.

Tell me once just why your lies
were twice the size of her own eyes?
Now the sounds are only cries.
With frozen pearls, she slowly dies.

Deep deep down in the ocean blue
Where only the rarest rays of sunshine reach
Where darkness roams and seaweed grows
Where light is scarce and danger lies
Among the fishes in the weed,
a beautiful octomaid swims.

Her skin like pearls, her face so fair
Long-lost treasury in the wavy hair
With conch-shells singing her fanfare
A beauty to make men weep
A glitter of pink in the darkness of the deep.

She floats and twirls 'till she reaches the light
Sunshine reflects in her hair so bright
She opens her mouth and starts to sing;
Her voice like gold and honey flows,
Otherworldly it starts to grow.

She stops, and listen
Listens to the sea
A shape draws near: she starts again
Beautiful, enthralling, the ship passing by
She smiles at the sailors, a maddening smile.

There's a fire within, burning bright
A mask for the darkness, slipping away
From light to dark, revealing a truth
The sailor don't notice, too in love with her voice
Her teethy smile, luring him in.

Deep deep down in the ocean blue
Where only the rarest rays of sunshine reach
Where darkness roams and seaweed grows
Where light is scarce and danger lies
Among the corpses in the weed,
She's drawing you down to drown.

I Sea You

There once was agirl,

From a very wetworld,
Oh how she wandered,
And she alwayspondered,
How is the worldabove?
When she saw thewings of a dove,
Fly over her, as shewaited and waited…..

She heard a “drip,drip, drip….”
Above her was a verylarge ship!
Maybe she will see,
The man who is he?
As he saw her swimdown under,
Is this true love? Ireally wonder….

at the bottom of the ocean,
sifting through the sand,
an octomaid with mournful eyes,
collects seashells by hand

so pretty are the cockleshells,
that shine in beams of sun,
whatever could it be then,
that’s made her feel so glum?

perhaps she is a princess,
who’d rather walk on land,
with an overbearing father,
who cannot understand

or maybe she sells seashells,
up by the seashore,
but business isn’t doing quite,
as well as once before

could it be a long lost love,
has left her heart in pain,
once they gathered shells together,
but never will again

in truth it’s much more simple,
the distress on which she dwells,
it is the very reason why,
she must collect the shells,

though hidden from the world above,
deep down in the brine,
somewhere you’d think a lack of shells,
would be perfectly just fine

there are still laws that she must heed,
lest she end up doing time,
she must cover up her exposed breasts,
or be jailed...for nipple crimes

I'm late, I'm late!
I was supposed to be home by eight!
Father will be upset, mother will warn not to protest.

Surely he'll understand when I show him my hands.
Shells and clams, such a wonderful find!
All of these will surely change his mind.

He'll forgive me, he'll praise me.
I'll make amends, I'll promise that it won't happen again.
