After several dangerous attempts from the government with new technological experiments, planet earth decided it had enough. It reacted badly to the experiments and because of the chemical reactions it wiped the civilization off earth. Not a very scientific reasoning, but that's what happened.
Liza survived, barely. She had anticipated this and spent most of her ordinary days in her bunker, and it ended up with her being the only person left alive on earth. Person, yes. But she met Togo while scavenging for food after her supplies had ended, no idea how the rascal survived but he joined Liza as her companion. With the help of Togo's smell perception they scavenge for food and other weird animals that erupted from the weird chemical responses, they're eatable though.They have their little base set up, somewhere in the wasteland. 

Liza had Togo and her favoirite AC/DC shirt though, so life wasn't that bad.
