I usually buy just the very cheap stuff and I think the only brand thing I own is a nyx lipstick and the other stuff is probably just no-name brands

The brand sure has to be cruelty free & vegan. Then I try the product on hand to see the pigment, how long it takes to dry, how easy it is to smudge and take off, colour, application, price, all these things. But when I go check something out, it's usually because of Instagram hype. :d
