Title: No 5, 1948

Artist: Jackson Pollock

Date: 1948

Location: Private collection

Fun fact: The lyrics of The Stone Roses song "Going Down" include a reference to the painting: "(There) she looks like a painting - Jackson Pollock's Number 5..." The Stone Roses' guitarist John Squire created cover artwork for many of the band's releases on Silvertone Records in a style similar to that of Jackson Pollock.

Title: The School of Athens

Artist: Raphael

Date: 1509-11

Location: Apostolic Palace, Vatican City

Fun fact:  It was painted between 1509 and 1511 as a part of Raphael's commission to decorate the rooms now known as the Stanze di Raffaello, in the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican. The Stanza della Segnatura was the first of the rooms to be decorated, and The School of Athens, representing Philosophy, was probably the second painting to be finished there, after La Disputa (Theology) on the opposite wall, and the Parnassus (Literature).

Title: The Son of Man

Artist: Rene Magritte

Date: 1964

Location: Private collection

Fun fact: The painting plays an important role in the 1999 version of The Thomas Crown Affair. It appears several times, especially in the final robbery scenes when men wearing bowler hats and trench coats carry briefcases throughout the museum to cover Crown's movements and confuse the security team.

Title: The Night Watch

Artist: Rembrandt van Rijin

Date: 1642

Location: Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam

Fun fact: For much of its existence, the painting was coated with a dark varnish, which gave the incorrect impression that it depicted a night scene, leading to the name by which it is now commonly known. This varnish was removed only in the 1940s.

ah, we had that in art history...I'm actually a fan of northern artists^^
