Okay that’s a fair point, but shouldn’t the part always go to the best actor? If, for arguments sake, the person on the spectrum, who was considered for the part, didn’t have sufficient acting abilities, but someone who wasn’t did, shouldn’t the part go to the person who can do it justice?

if that was actually the case, they would invite actors of every gender, sexuality, skin color, disabled/not disabled,....... for EVERY role for every show which they don't do since creators often have a specific type for a role in mind.

there are plenty of good actors out there, it's their job to act good. Someone can be the best actor in the world and still not be suited for every role there is.
Well you could never audition everyone, but let’s for arguments sake say that you had 20 actors in mind. 10 on the spectrum, 10 not. Out of those 20, the part will still go to whomever is able to preform the best audition for a producer or however that goes down. So if it so happens to be someone not on the spectrum, shouldn’t that then be alright, if they were the best actor amongst the chosen group?

Or do you believe they should’ve gotten 20 people on the spectrum in, and kept looking til they found someone on the spectrum? Like not ask anyone who’s not? Just curiousl cause I mean that could work too 🤔

Not really following anymore, sorry.

in this specific case i think sia didn't even let people on the spectrum audition for the main role as far as i know, so how should we know if that maddie was even the best choice?

Lol I might sound a bit confused, I’m just trying to get a picture if what you think the ideal casting situation should’ve looked like. Should they’ve only allowed people on the spectrum to audition, and kept searching within that structure, or is it okay for a non autistic(I dont know is theres another term for that) to get the part, if they couldn’t find one within the people they auditioned?

From what I can tell(granted from Sias own tweets, so might not be true), they did have a girl in, who was on the spectrum, and according to sia, she found the whole thing stressful and couldn’t do it

here's a video where an actor on the spectrum explains his perspective on autistic characters played by nt actors (he acts in holby city,a british hospital drama show), they also explain how they had to make some changes on the set to make him more comfortable but how it paid off in the end.

Awesome that they made him comfortable, that’s amazing. And again more power to them, but if they couldn’t achieve this on “Music”, in your opinion, shouldnt it then be okay for a non autistic to play the role?or do you believe that they should’ve then put the production on hold until they found someone on the spectrum that could play the part?

They can do whatever they want and people can not like it, that's how the showbiz works, we'll see if the movie flops or not.

this is just my personal opinion here, but what's the point of making a movie about the magic of music and how autistic people can find joy and happiness and deserve to be included if they can't even provide an environment where an autistic actor feels comfortable.

Excellent point, and on that point I agree wholeheartedly. Guess it’s anyone’s guess how it’s actually gonna turn out? Thanks for explaining it to me, google was no help ❤️

Okay maybe I’m not getting it, but acting is “pretending to be something your not”, so what’s wrong with Maddie playing this role?
I agree that Sia is acting childish on her tweets, but other than that, I don’t get it? I mean I want to get it, but I don’t?

Actors of a marginalised community have it hard enough to land roles as it is, when there is a role that is part of that community and even then they don't get that role, that's kind of fucked up.

I mean if a character in a book is discribed as a dark haired 16yo who is 6'2 you probably wouldn't cast danny devito for that role either (except if it's a parody maybe)
No but let’s say you’re handed a script with a chick who plays the violin. Does the part have to go to only violin playing actors? Or can an actor who can “act” like the play the violin, do just as great a job?
that comparison was utterly terrible m8
