A loud high-pitched scream wakes me up from my peaceful sleep. It sounded like a woman straight from a horror movie. I usually hear these shrieks, and dad said it was the foxes in the backyard. He said he wishes he could find those foxes and make them stop. Tonight, dad wasn’t home, he went to the bar to drink with his work friends. The howling won’t stop, it sounds like the animal is in a lot of pain. I grabbed dads’ flashlight and head for the backyard. I walk toward the back of the yard and the screaming intensifies. Dad told me to never go back there, the foxes might bite me. But I couldn’t stop myself; the animal's wails were so horrid, and I wanted to help it. Finally, I reached the end of the backyard, and the screaming is so loud now it pierces my ears. There is a handmade shack standing in front of me that’s dirty and poorly made. It’s creepy but I slowly open the door, and it creeks. The screeching stops, I start to hear whimpering. The creature is definitely in trouble.

“Please, please don’t hurt me...”

That is not a fox. Dad’s truck headlights shine as he pulls into the driveway. In a panic I shut the door and sprint back to the house. I slip inside right as he enters.

“Dad, the foxes are being really loud tonight I had trouble sleeping”

“I’ll take care of it.”

The moonlight illuminated the room through the window as the wind blew shuffling the curtains, she felt the night breeze kiss in her cheeks and its cold whisper. Sleeping that day was an impossible task, the girl decided then to stop trying and embraced her insomniac state.

Something seemed off, she couldn't tell exactly what. Maybe if she washed her face this strange feeling would go away, slip in the sink's drain, and vanish completely. The corridor lamp started flickering, she felt a chill up her spine, what a scaredy-cat she was. Courage, she murmured quietly for herself.

The running water was ice cold in her fair bare hands, the palm turning red as the blood flood there increased, the body fighting the drastic temperature change. The morning began to rise tinting the bathroom walls a yellowish tone, sleeping time was definitely gone. She dried her face, looked at the mirror, and noticed.

There was no reflection of her.  She tried other mirrors in the house, not a single sight of herself. Something glittered in the vintage mirror in her room, driven by curiosity she pressed the fingertips in the glass surface. It shredded in tiny pieces and her arm slipped in the reflection.

The room was exactly like hers, she could see the real one through the broken glass. And then she saw herself, the girl on the other side smiled, the pointy white teeth glimmering. Without success, she attempted to return, screamed, and cried. The girl was trapped

"The thirsty ghost"

When I was a child my mother told me a ghost story, a teenager who died on the road, and time after the accident neighbors saw/heard him asking for water at the midnight. I didn't remember that story until one summer that all my family was at the beach house, everything was amazing, all the cousins and my sisters were there, we were teens.

We love midnight bonfires on the beach, all the family was there and I forgot my special mix of chips so I went to the house, when I was in the kitchen I heard a knocking on the door, it was weird because the house is a little far from the road but I went to the door; "Good night, could you give me a glass of water, please?", my heart beated so hard at that moment I didn't know what to say or what to do, I was frozen. I waited a while and listened as he walked away from the door and walked to the side of the window, I heard the footsteps but there was no one out there, I did not see anyone.

A chill ran through my body, my mom appeared and asked if I was okay, I could only answer "He came to ask for water"

kuchisake onna

when i was ten, this urban legend was told to me and my sisters by our very own mother.

disfigured by her husband, kuchisake onna was a lady with a mouth slit to her ears, who would wander around the streets nearby school with a face mask on.

she would ask if she's pretty, and if you say no, she would proceed to kill you with the scissors her husband mutilated her with
if you say yes, she takes her mask off and asks if she's still pretty.
if you still say yes, she would proceed to slit the victims mouth like hers, and if you say no, she would cut you in half.

we were very scared when our mom told us that story, so we would always stick together.

"im already a teenager, why am i still scared of a fictional story that mom told us about?
i'll text her that she doesnt need to drive me today." i thought, while texting mom, and placed it in my pocket.

i skipped down the path my mom usually drives, until i saw my classmate with someone.
"lets walk home together!" i yelled.

She turns around, shivering, with blood gushing out her lips, covering her mouth, she mutters, "RUN"

i ran as fast as i could, and saw ten missed calls from mom.
"please pick me up, i just saw her!"
as i feel a tap on my shoulder, i turn around...

"am i pretty?"

"Saturn Devouring His Son"

When I was younger, I often stayed in my basement. We had a TV corner there, because my mom said that my dad used to watch football there because he would make such a fuss when watching the NFL-games. After he got his own place in the basement, my mother was happy with staying undisturbed. My bestfriend was not quite a big fan of staying in the basement. When I went upstairs for drinks he usually joined me. One day we had just watched a movie based on the story “Saturn Devouring His Son”, and my friend was quite terrified. We took our drinks, and we went down to the basement again. I walked behind him, and quickly locked the door after he went inside, “it was halloween” i said to myself “he can handle a tiny scare”. He started to scream, and after some seconds I started to unlock the door, but the door did not budge. I panicked, and started to call out for my mom. I had no chance to get help, as the basement was soundproof. The screaming turned louder, and my only thought was to get my mother and get out of there. We drove away in the car while I called the police. We stayed at my grandparents for a couple of days before my mother had gotten an update from the policemen: They had found the blood of my friend, but also the DNA of my dad that died 5 years ago.

Wordcount: 250

The story I made is based on the painting "Saturn Devouring His Son". I did not take inspiration from the options above, but we can say that the mom woke up from her child that is screaming that they had to get out of the house. I hope the story gave you the creeps, and is "approved" for the competition. Happy halloween!

When I was a child I was once told, never to go to the lake alone. It was summer and I decided to go out with my friends on a camping trip. We couldn’t decide where to go, so we all decided to go to the local lake. The story was always in the back of my mind, my relatives always told me the same old thing but nothing more, so I didn’t think much about it. We got there, swam, ate smores, watched the stars under the sky, and told scary stories. One story was about an urban legend of how a young boy drowned in the lake. It was said he was lured out there by someone singing; the boy went to check out it was, but never returned. We all laughed at the story (come on? who would sing in the dead of night and blindly follow the source?) we all thought it was a silly legend and soon went to sleep. In the middle of the night I could hear water splashing. I thought one of our friends went into the lake for a midnight swim, but then we heard someone singing an old tune… We all got up to make sure everyone was accounted for. But then in the distance, we saw what looked like a silhouette of a young boy looking across at us from the middle of the lake. No face, just a black shadow as it slowly inched towards us….

“Do you like Adele’s hair, Millie?” my boss asked. “…Who?” I asked innocently. “Adele.” repeated my boss skeptically. “You know Adele. I think she looks gorgeous on her new record. What do you think?” “It looks good” I answer, smiling.

     I hate Adele’s hair…And her music….

I mingle towards two colleges discussing politics. “…this bill made gun licenses more practical.” the man says. “It made the process easier when I bought my handgun.” the woman adds. She turns to me: “Aren’t you so glad to live where the governor cares about our rights?” she inquires. “It’s great” I answer, smiling.

Gun rights enthusiasts are annoying. I wish they’d just get shot already

After the party, a colleague walks me home. “You always come to these parties, Millie, but I never really get the chance to talk to you…” he says after obligatory small talk. “Maybe…if you’re not busy tomorrow, we could…get coffee on our break?” he asks, fidgeting with his hair. I realize the question posed and continue walking. “Sorry” I respond without turning around “I’m busy.” I don’t wait for him but promptly reach my door.

Luke’s nice but he’s…nice…and cheerful…It kinda makes me hate him…

After locking the door, I half-heartedly wash my make-up off and flop into bed. The next morning, when I go to brush my teeth, something feels off. When I finish, it finally dawns on me: my reflection is gone.

“Thank God” I exclaim. I finally relate to what I see in the mirror…
