Only linguistics I have now is the small part of law that is linguistics by comparing different words to each other.

My favorite is the legal differences in the words best efforts, reasonable care and due diligence.

Also when we have a longer discussion on whether a shrew is "legally" a mouse or not
wording and law is very interestin

also very fascinating subject is european law from a translation perspective
It's fucked up sometimes too. We had a fun facts professor one of the first semesters and he spend a lot of time going through wrong punctuation in some laws that had cost states millions.

I never got EU law translations honestly. They all are weighted equally at the courts in theory, but I don't understand how that works in real life. Some of it is of course mitigated by making descriptions and definitions in the early articles, but still
help thats wild

basically eu law translations is super source oriented and has to keep all punctuation from original (i think french?) so it remains as similar as possible across languages which makes it incredibly taxing to read and translate but a bit more consistent... but like as a whole yes its sorta this impossible problem cos its not like there is a such a thing as a translation without interpretation

It's how it is sometimes. Law is really something we've written down and then some people are like "but how do I argue this isn't about what I'm doing?" and run with it.

It is! But I just don't get how they weigh them. Usually you'll weigh one language above another for translations (I think english, french, chinese in the UN, but I'm not sure) but EU just decided to say "no all" for it. I do know it's a general problem with interpretations though, because sometimes we get some weird translations in Danish that get a lot of critique in class for "this article says x, but it means x + y + z, because it does in the german and english version and the courts said so in this specific case. Idk why it's translated like that" ?? like that shit isn't confusing af
