Ok but what if we stopped buying things from for instance China? The people who work to make cheap clothes will not have anything to live off because they basically live to produce cheap items to sell to international customers. People buy and eat meat and if everyone stops doing that the farmers will have a huge problem as well because they have too many animals now, and they were dependent on the fact that people bought their meat. Now the farmers would have cows that will get fake pregnant and milk that is going to waste, because everyone is going vegan these days. The world somehow goes around like this. The world is and has always been constantly evolving and changinh, slowly but surely. It was made like idk a trillion years ago (dont come for me on this cuz i have no idea) and it has evolved since then. It used to be dinosaurs and then monkeys. The dinosaurs died and the monkeythings turned into humanbeings. That is already because of a (climate) change. Our world will keep on evolving and changing. Maybe faster than people had imagines, but it will happen no matter what humans try to do to stop it. We have known about this matter for years. Our grandparents and parents knew about this, and its not our new generations responsibility to take action. It was going to happen sooner or later. Everything changes. No one freaked out about this in 2008? Why not? Now that is 2019 people suddenly act like they have 1 second left to live before the world  explodes. It wont.

but why are people freaking out now? hasn't this been a thing for a long long time like i swear ive heard about climate change since 2009 but it's only last year and this year people actually suddenly seem to care

and suddenly "zero waste" is a hot thing which.... can be debated how genuine it actually is and how much of it is just painting up a picture, how many times have i actually used my metal straws? maybe 5 but appariently its a "must have"

i also feel like sometimes all the responsibility is put on us consumers when its about what you can afford and what you have access to and even then SURE you can buy this schampoo bar on etsy that says its handmade and vegan and zero waste but its going to get here on a plane
I highly agree on this.

( had to divide it to easier address it. )

You'll also have to consider those who take the work, work that easily means a bad working environment, being in touch with toxins without proper equipment, not being paid fair because they are poor, and much more depending on what they work with. Something that is being put into system when the producers of fx. clothing can hire them cheap without regulations that provide them proper worker-rights because they need to have any income to survive. Most of these jobs also occurred when western companies figured they could profit from this by moving their fabrics and find workers in poorer countries in the later 1900. I can't say what they will do if - in theory - the whole "buying from china" business were ended. I do not think it will happen. What I'd rather see is proper ethical treatment and sustainable practices taken up by companies that enforce the production. A lot of what's looked down upon items from china is the quality, or rather the preference of quantity, making nearly every clothing produced possible to trash after a few uses because the pieces are so poorly constructed.

Overnight is not likely to happen. A lot of people aren't even able to go vegan if they wanted to. The meat industry wouldn't collapse as an overnight thing. The marked would probably drop slowly and they'd have to align their production to the statistics -- or try to greenwash, advertise and a) overproduce and not getting it sold, inevitably learning the lesson or\and b) going broke. However, the life of the animals can't honestly overshadow the negative impact of the meat industry and use our empathy towards living livestock as a card when they will be killed anyway if the industry went on as normal. The animals would probably have better lives outside of the industry. naturally, the sheer amount of animals that are being bred for meat and dairy in the world would never exist in that quantity. A lot of farmers would be able to take up vegetable and texstile crop farming, that being said they haven't made their acres of acres of soil infertile and used up their groundwater by their unsustainable practices already. Then they'd probably have to clean that up first, which - for all we know - could be enforced or supported by the state if that time comes. [wild scenario]

It is true that the world change and the climate as well. The rapidity of the event is what we are talking about with climate change. A higher frequency of extreme weather with more extreme temperatures, higher overall temperatures ++. The problem is not that these factors are changing, it always has.  It is more that it is happening so fast - due to specific human actions - species can't adapt fast enough. That includes humans. I think a lot of people forget that humans only fully evolved after Weichel. Meaning we are not adapted to other temperatures than the ones that have existed as the norm since then. Climate breakdown change that normal, and it is an event we have never experienced before, able to put the whole mankind under severe distress and possible extinction.

Our parents and grandparents knew about this are really not working since you also remove the younger generations from responsibility. Our parents and grandparents where does generations once. Most of them didn't know what was going on. The moment rapports that concluded that the release of GHG affected our climate, politicians, and companies that did not benefit from this started to lobby against it. To make people doubt it, therefore take the easy way out and not do something because it isn't certain. What's certain is that the changes we're seeing have exploded from what was normal just 50 years ago. For the first time, the average person can see and experience how climate breakdown is affecting the planet.

The younger generations do have a responsibility. We have the same as the generations before us had: to make Earth living for future generations. Yes, they've been passive and not done close to enough, but they are neither to blame. We have to acknowledge the fact that the companies that profit from their business have been lobbying against the idea of climate change from the start. And we'll be back to the point that the average human being only can do so much. Does the fact that you can only do little say that you should do nothing? No, if you ask me. If we desire a sustainable world without the worst cases of climate change most of us will have to change our lifestyle, solely because how the western world live today is not sustainable.  But generations are not to blame. Blame the persons with names and addresses and their companies.

I assure you, people probably freaked out about this back in 2008.  Just fewer. Because people didn't know or had enough information to really comprehend what was going on. That we are seeing people use their power to put their voice in this fight is important. UN gave us 12 years to limit a climate catastrophe. We are in a hurry.

The straw debate is rather on plastic pollution than climate change. But a good example of how companies shifted the responsibility of disposing of their products by blaming the consumer. It's also a testament to the regulations that don't hold companies responsible for what they make and never have.

Plastic has existed for about 70 years. The knowledge of the consequences of it are results of recent studies.

to elaborate on the straw debate:
i think it is stupid to outlaw, because disabled people need them to drink. and yes, sometimes a disposable plastic straw can be switched out for another form of straw, but disabilities are not one size fits all, and for some people a plastic straw is the only viable option. furthermore, it is downright disgusting how servers in restaurants suddenly has gotten the right to decide who is or who isnt disabled enough to be granted a drinking straw.

i think the straw debate is a dumb scapegoat, and if people really cared that much about pollution in the oceans, they would also advocate as heavily for regulations of the fishing industries plastic fishing nets, or they would cut out fish. but cutting out fish is a bigger lifestyle change than not buying straws, and people are lazy and irresponsible.

But do you seriously believe everyone would stop eating meat overnight? that's a pretty weak argument. if it happened over a long period of time (as it would if that would ever happen) demand would go down slowly they wouldnt suddenly be stuck with a farm full of animals and no one to sell to bc why would they make sure they have so many animals when the demand doesnt cover that
and even if no one ate meat we would still need farmers so idgi
