i've seen people say that some methods linger too long on pinyin? is that like baby's first chinese?

Yeah ! it's where you write with tones on top of western letters, so Nǐ shì wǒ de péngyǒu (pinyin) instead of 你是我的朋友 (mandarin)

I think it's good to start characters early, and then to learn the correct tones either use colours or make a small mark (in another colour) on top of the character, and then just learn the associated sound with the character from start (ish)
