We as consumer have very little individual power to change things. Of course there are things we can do, like avoiding fast fashion and only buying things we truly need, but I think it's mostly in the hands of corporations and politicians, which is kinda scary. Other than we vote for eco friendly policies and support eco friendly companies, there's not much we can do. But not everyone can afford eco friendly products and lobbying is a thing.

That's a lot of right! and it sure is scary knowing that our futures are at the hands of companies that only want money.
on the matter of "eco-friendly products" the most eco-friendly one can do is use what you already have or buy it second-hand. Something that is much cheaper than buying it brand new from a "green store." However, you make a point. There's a lot of privilege in any movement.

🇸🇮🇲🇵🇱🇪 🇦🇱🇹🇪🇷🇳🇦🇹🇮🇻🇪🇸 🇫🇴🇷 🇱🇪🇸🇸 🇹🇷🇦🇸🇭
DISCLAIMER\\ ALWAYS USE what you already have FIRST. Even if they are tools made of plastic!

Plastic toothbrush ➭ bamboo toothbrush or lasting electrical (bamboo don't always give the necessary care. You'll figure this through use.)
Shampoo\balsam in plastic bottles ➭ shampoo\balsam bars, refill stations or home biodegradable packaging
Period disposables ➭ reusable cotton pads, period cup, period panties. or organic tampons (if you do not like the reusables.)
Shopping bag ➭ reusable bag in fx. cotton (stay away from the plastic.) Can also be sewn from a t-shirt.
Waterbottle ➭ reusable, stainless steel bottle or reuse an old plastic water bottle until you can’t anymore.
Food scrapseat up, freeze or compost if you can. Food that is sent to the landfill release potent greenhouse gases when they decompose in an unsuited environment. Bokashi or other types of compost will make free soil as well.
Food packaging ➭ try to stay away from plastic packaging. choose paper, metal or glass which you should recycle or reuse. Bring own produce bags if there are bulk options in the store.
Clothing ➭ buy after need, not desire. Buy with the intention of at least 30 uses. Buy second-hand, with recycled or natural materials, eco-friendly practices (they will be transparent!) or swap with someone else to reduce your consumption. If you want to dispose of them, look for alternatives of reuse (sell, gift, donate, remake) before you throw them away. Look into textile recycling close to you where you can deliver them.
Plastic Straws ➭ Cut them out entirely or invest in your own reusable (stainless steel, glass) or compostable (bamboo). Paper is kinda crappy so would not recommend.
Kitchen tools ➭ Choose wooden with natural bristles instead of plastic or metal.
Cleaning soaps etc. ➭ Look for natural alternatives. Fx. soapnuts for laundry, natural washing powders, DIY with vinegar. There’s a lot of recipes out there. Soapbars instead of bottles if they aren’t refillable close to you.
Plastic wrapping for food ➭ BeeWax Wrap or vegan wax wrap. Fx. by Wrappa. You can also just use a plate to put onto the bowl to remove it completely.
Cutlery ➭ Come prepared. Bring your own from your drawers if you’re going out for a snack. Probably not needed in decent restaurants, but can be useful for ice cream or street food etc.
Paper towels ➭ Reusable towels

O T H E R S:
Buying online? ➭ Bulk buy to reduce packaging. Choose "green" options or companies when available. Also, look for retailers close to home!! fx. located in the country you are in.
Want to reduce the carbon footprint on produce transportation? ➭ Look for local markets and stores. They are already shipped or produced close to you. You don’t need to get one shipped just for you.
Want to help the environment a little? Take 5 for the Ocean when you see trash on the ground. Join a beach cleaning or clean up on your own lot.
Want to collect the microplastics from your laundry? ➭ Invest in a laundry bag, fx. guppybag that will collect most of it for you from your synthetic clothing.

Bulk stores are an amazing tool if you can afford it and have one close to you.
Recycle everything you can, but don't believe it will save us. REDUCTION is the solely best alternative.

______
Don't expect to do everything overnight. It is a process that requires some money and experience to do and having money available to take different measures is a privilege not everyone has. When I started I did one swap a month and figured which change would do the most change in my life right now alas reduce most.

I need to rant for a moment about compostable and biodegradable VS PLASTIC. Excuse me.

i. biodegradable vs compostable
Both terms relate to organic materials breaking down in a specific environment. However,
biodegradable is a term often misused in advertisements of natural products because it doesn't tell you much and isn't necessarily good for the environment at all. The definition of biodegradable is: "a material is capable of undergoing biological anaerobic or aerobic degradation leading to the production of CO2, H2O, methane, biomass, and mineral salts, depending on the environmental conditions of the process."  While this may look good, let's take a look at compostable. A compostable product can be "placed into a composition of decaying biodegradable materials, and eventually turns into a nutrient-rich material." Also known as soil.  "It is almost synonymous with “biodegradable”, except it is limited to solid materials and does not refer to liquids."
Compostable defines the place it needs to compost. Biodegradable doesn't and as a thumb rule, that means you can't compost it at home because you won't have the right conditions. It's not even sure facilities that properly biodegrade the product exist in your country and no way of knowing it reaches it properly through your local waste management. The same is with most compostable terms, which makes another rule and that is HOME COMPOSTABLE. That's only time you'll be sure the product you're buying can be composted in your garden, local compost bin or by using Bokashi, etc.

ii. bioplastic and biodegradable plastic
Bioplastic is plastic where the carbon is sourced from corn, wheat, algae, etc. Sources that are considered renewable, but also affects our food availability. All of them are biological masses and therefore let it have the "bio" part as a kind of green check. However, bioplastic is not much better than fossil fuel-based plastics because in the term of polymer behavior there's no difference. It may appear environmentally friendly and even be used as such but it isn't.
Biodegradable plastic is made to break down in compost or landfill where the temperatures are high enough (for most of us this means special facilities). Most of these are not designed to degrade in the ocean. It does not break down until soil, but components as methane, CO2 and HO2.

WHEN YOU CAN'T COMPOST... RECYCLE?
Sounds like a good point to start, was it not for the fact that most plastic isn't being recycled. In fact, only 9% of the world's produced plastic is assumed recycled (2018.) 12% has been burned and the rest (79%) are hanging around, slowly breaking down into micro- and nano plastics. At the moment known polluted natural areas are our oceans, drinking water, seafood, soil, and air. Plastic emits toxics when it breaks down in the environment which affects the water quality and soil health. all initially leads towards worse living qualities for humans.

Most synthetic clothes aren't recyclable due to being made of mixed materials.
Other reasons are: Quality (plastic does only have a limited lifespan until it can't be recycled, which means it initially ends up as waste that never really goes away (unless burned with the release of GHGs) and will continue to pollute.) Money. Just fragments of the plastic created are recycled today, and more could be - not only of the types that are recycled but other, less common alternatives - but are stopped because it is too expensive. There's also not a good enough market to deal with it.

So knowing that plastic always will end up at waste or burned REDUCTION is the solely best alternative because we can't keep burning it forever. Plastic is made from FOSSIL FUELS which means burning plastic is burning FOSSIL FUELS.
To think you can recycle or burn your way out of a problem like this It's like dealing with the physical effects of a broken bone and not the broken bone itself. And the plastic industry and oil and gas industry wants this. They want us to point fingers at Asia for being grand polluters when much of what we need to do is look at our own consumption of plastic and reduce it to the best of our abilities and privileges. Western society is a  massive contributor to plastic waste.
