Poll: Are you for or against Nuclear energy?
FT: Chernobyl disaster
Pitbull

A little dark topic, on a sunny day. An important topic, in my opinion.

The chernobyl disaster was a huge a nuclear accident, that changed the world and our view on nuclear energy. Looking at statistic, the amount of solar cells in this world has been increasing (yay!)

It is possible to travel there, on kinda like a guided tour.
It's amazing, almost mesmerizing the way the nature has recaptured the area (I'll insert a few before and after pictures)
Funny thing is that people are starting to move back to the "safety " zones, just outside chernobyl (yet radioactive fallout is still possible)

My question is:
What is your opinion on nuclear energy?
What do you think we learned from the disaster?
Would you ever visit? and what do you think of people living very close to the radioactive areas?

My opinion on nuclear energy: Although it's supposedly clean energy, there are still heavy risks in case of a meltdown. But, of correct safety measures and quality control is performed, then I see no problems with it.
Of course that probably wasn't the case during the Chernobyl incident.

What did we learn? Better regulation and how to properly follow safety protocols  before this type of accident occurs.

No I'd never visit a place with possible radioactive contamination that will never be cleaned up,
You are doing yourself no favors by moving back into safe zones, Radioactivty is nothing to mess with, especially with the potentional to mess up your genetic structure and cause possible disease/illness.

Maybe this doesn't belong here. But i'd love to visit there because i love abandoned places with history.

I love to read about this and all facts, such as people sold stuff they found in these appartments without thinking about that they are radioactive and makes you sick.

They tried to cover this up, the disaster but meters in other countries, such as Sweden, alert.
This choice of words are horrible but i don't even know the swedish words for it lmao.

True!
I've visited once. It's not quite the summer vacation most people would opt for!

Well, I'd like to know arguments that support the use of nuclear energy.

man i watched the new chernobyl miniseries on HBO and it was terrifying. i didn't know much about the chernobyl disaster before watching it, and after watching the first episode i was still thinking about it days later. just how horrifying it all was, that they tried to cover it up and all the people getting sick without realizing it, jesus... radiation is a really scary thing tbh

i talked to my dad about it too. he was coming home from military service when he heard about the accident. he told me he remembers it well, just wondering how bad the nuclear fallout will be, if the wind will carry it over to where we live etc...
