but, mers and sars had a higher lethal rate than corona (by far higher) and back then people seemed kinda chill about it

that's what some experts say
(heard it on two separate interviews from two separate virologists from Germany on the radio about two weeks ago)
that's btw the way most infections work
if a vast majority of people has had the disease and thus has antiagents (of course given that this works, people still aren't sure about double infections, but it's highly discussed right now), they virus will have more issues finding a new host and thus there will be less infections. Which means, that a tiny percentage of the population won't ever be infected, because the epidemy "dies out" at some point
that's something you usually learn in biology class (it's also why it's so important to vaccinate for things that are severe and have a vaccine: so people who can't have the vaccine because of other diseases have a lower chance of getting it, because the majority of people is immune and can't spread the disease)

funny how I said exactly the same thing yesterday and no one cared...
