(yea! how about miles accidentally tells riley at the harvesting festivity-thingy? he admits he's glad the bastard died and riley's slightly confused and he tells her cause he's drunk??)
(oh yes, he could slip up and give her a clue or something and then she starts digging into his family and maybe holdens mom)

Lou was nearly halfway through her meal as she noticed a black haired woman had entered the diner. The woman was looking over at her from the counter and instinctively Lou looked the other way as they made eye contact. It felt as if she had seen her before – probably at the funeral, but there had been so many people, it had been impossible for her to get an impression of everyone.

The diner had nearly emptied out at this time though, and as one of the last customers left, it was just the two of them remaining. Lou finished up the last of her burger, but remained in her seat, keeping her eye on the woman by the counter while sipping at the remains of her ice tea.

Riley's order was taking longer than usual, ever since they started hiring teens the diner had steadily gone downhill. Bored, but slightly curious, she decided to approach the stranger sitting alone at her table.

"You're not from here.", Her eyes narrowed and she went into full detective mode. From her looks, she seemed well off. She was well dressed, but she wasn't wearing designer - so someone with a work ethic, made enough money to afford good clothes, but smart enough not to spend a fortune. That ruled out her being in any way related to the Richmond family. But she had to be their because of the funeral... She ordered a burger, and a greasy one at that. Probably skipped lunch. Wait, was that an ink stain on her hand?

"You're reporting on the murder of Richmond aren't you?", Riley concluded at sat down across from the woman.

Lou looked up as the woman in the diner sat down in front of her and spoke.

"I am."

She was a little perplexed, but then noticed the woman's police badge and suddenly the whole attire made sense to her. Very small town detective like. "Officer," Lou nodded in respect, jokingly. She took a sip from the straw in her glass and heard the slurps of the last watered down drops of ice tea try to reach the straw at the bottom. As good as empty. Not bothering with it, she put her drink to the side.

"You've got quite the interesting town here, don't you think?" She tilted her head to the side in a questioning manner as she spoke.

"No, I wouldn't.", Riley countered, as the waiter sat her plate in front of her. She shoved a fry in her mouth and tilted her head just as the women before her had done.

Did Riley have a personal vendetta against Woods Creek? No, she thought of her hometown as rather dull. It was comfortable, sure, knowing everyone and in return being known - but she dearly hoped this wasn't going to be her end destination. Of course, she wouldn't admit it out loud, ever, but Riley was terribly scared Woods Creek was all that she deserved. She'd done the unforgivable and escaped punishment. Maybe someday she'd be able to forgive herself, let go of the past and start over. That day wasn't today, and she suspected it wouldn't be the day after that either.

"Heard anything good yet? I mean, I'm sure you've already struck gold with Junior", she said and shoved a few more fries in her mouth. It was a lucky guess, he knew the guy had a thing for redheads, well, women in general. Holden Jr loved the sound of his own voice, she wouldn't be surprised to find that he had agreed to talk to journalist before letting the police interrogate him. Especially a journalist like that.

"Hmm..." Lou stared out the window, at the quiet street outside the window, now only lit by a few lampposts. "Not really. Junior," she looked back at the detective, "had no surprises up his sleeve. Well, not for now. It doesn't take a sharp mind to guess that Holden Sr. most likely wasn't the warmest of parents. That's all I got, anyway. But I suppose you already know that." She smiled at Riley as she spoke the last sentence.

The waiter approached their table and looked at Lou.

"Dessert? Coffee?"

She nodded. Sure, why not, she couldn't leave Riley to eat her meal alone. "I could eat a slice of pie," she replied. The waiter scribbled the order down and trodded off again, and Lou returned to study Riley again.

"I'm sorry, I didn't catch your name, Officer...?"

Riley finished her sandwich in about four bites.

"Hepburn.", She replied and lean back in her seat. The diner was empty now, and the waiter was glaring at the two, likely eager to get home. She yawned.

"And you would be?" She didn't really care for journalist, sure, they served a purpose. Most of the time. Being a journalist in Woods Creek would be a drag, though. Being an investigator? Even worse. She grabbed a few more fries but they were getting kind of cold.

The waiter came over with Lou's slice of pie shortly after taking her order, and she began nibbling at it with her fork.

"I'm Lou." She hadn't yet gotten used to the fake name, having to catch herself before she said 'Louise'. "Lou Taylor." Riley finished her meal a lot quicker than she had anticipated, leaving Lou nibbling away at her pie at her own pace. "So you catch any criminals yet? Can't be many suspects here, in a town like this," she suggested.

Riley chuckled.

"I don't think discussing details about an ongoing case with a journalist is the best move.", She said and pushed the plate to the side, leaving room to rest her elbows on the table.

"Although, I would love to get some info on the Richmonds. They're not as keen to talk to me.", She sighed. "We could make a deal", she then proposed, shoving another fry in her mouth but regretting it.

Lou thought it over as the finished up the last of her pie. She didn't have much information for the detective for the time being, but an offer like this was smart to keep the door open to. She followed suit and pushed her own plate aside as well.

"Sure, we could do that. What do you have in mind?" She smirked at Riley, resting her chin in the palm of her hand, her elbow resting on the table.

Riley grabbed her card and handed it to her as she stood up.

"Hear something interesting, let me know. I'll do the same.", She grabbed her wallet out of her back pocket and placed what she earned on the table. "See you around, Lou."

The Wood's creek festival. Celebrating the annual harvest had been a tradition upheld by the Wood's creek elite for hundreds of years. Considering the richest man to ever live in the god forsaken town had been murdered, it seemed rather bizarre that the tradition should live on, and yet, it did.

Apparently, it had been Holden Richmonds Jr's idea. After acquiring a sizable amount of his father's wealth the millionaire had decided to sponsor the festivities as a way of honoring the memory of his father. Needless to say, the decision had raised a few eyebrows. Riley suspected it was Holden Jr's way of getting an in with the town's mayor, who hadn't been a fan of his father.

"And so, let's raise all glasses for the years to come!", Holden Jr finished his speech. Riley was standing in a corner. Attending the festivities had not been her choice, she had hit a wall in the murder case and somehow managed to be talked into taking a break by a work friend, who was currently downing her fifth glass of champagne.

"What a turnout", her friend Kate commented as the applause subsided. They were at the Mayor's mansion, which made the Richmond Mansion seem like a dump. Riley looked around the place, recognizing almost everyone. It reminded her of the funeral, expect the alcohol had lightened the mood marginally. People were mingling, and she could tell Kate wanted to do the same.

"Riley Hepburn.", It was the mayor's wife who had approached the pair. She was wearing a floor length dress and Riley was reminded of how underdressed she truly was.

"Vivianne Brannon.", She replied with a forced smile.

"How's the investigation going?", Riley's fake smile faded. She knew the question would be asked time and time again throughout the night, motivating her claim of the lonely corner.

"Oh, well, I'm here so that about says it all.", She chuckled, but Vivianne didn't seem to get the joke.

"The party is lovely, I have to get the recipe for those pastries!", Katie exclaimed, in an attempt to break the tension. Vivianne lit up and the two began to chatter, giving Riley an opportunity to escape.

_

After making his toast, Holden Jr was greeted by what felt like the entire population of Wood's Creek. The event had been a success, as confirmed by the smile on the mayor's lips as he gave Holden a hug.

"Your father would be proud." He said proudly, and Holden smirked, taking a sip of his champagne. The weeks leading up to the Festival had been miserable. Rachel and his mother had bonded, and his mother had even begged for him to take his ex-wife back. It was morbid at best, but he couldn't blame his mother for her withering mind, his father had truly been her rock.

His eyes wandered around the great room, hoping to spot a particular redheaded woman in the crowd. They had spoken a few times after the funeral and Holden had personally invited her to join the festivities. Of course, he'd motivated the invitation by suggesting it would give her an insight to the social structures that defined the town. In reality, he just wanted a reason to spend time with her.

"Rachel, would you excuse me for a moment?", He asked as he felt his ex wife grab his arm. The more he pulled away, the harder the woman clammed on it seemed.
