Rachel let go as Holden finally yanked his arm away, and she stared at him with what could only be described as an attempt at making puppy eyes. She wasn't that desperate though, she had to remind herself, as she sighed and said "fine." She had noticed the red haired woman at the party as well, and hadn't been oblivious to the fact that Holden had been spending time with her. Rachel wasn't in a position to tell him, that she disproved of it, but she made sure to at least insinuate so, whenever she had the chance.

Miles had reluctantly decided to go to the party, when his family had more or less begged him to. They thought it would be good for him to have some more "proper" company - implying his usual company, Kevin, was not approved of. Celia had gone back to her husband and child the day after the funeral, to Miles' relief, so with her absence, he was a little more inclined to going to the party. It had been very awkward for the both of them, being around each other. Not many words had been exchanged, and it seemed to always be like that, whenever she was back in town.

He was dressed in a suit he had borrowed from his dad, per his parents request. The only suit he owned, they thought, was too old to be worn out in public. They had offered to buy him a new suit, but he had denied the offer, not feeling like he needed any handouts. Nor did he feel like he needed a new suit. So his dads it was. A compromise.

Standing in a corner by himself and nipping at a drink he had poured way too strong, he was contemplating whether he should try to find someone to talk to or not. He didn't feel like talking to anyone at the party apart from Holden, but at the moment, he seemed to be otherwise occupied. So alone in a corner it was.

Lou had been flattered when Holden had invited her to the party. She was unsure if it was as a date or what their situation was at the moment, but she sure had dressed for the occasion. He had made sure to let her know that the party was for the utmost upper class, so she wouldn't be caught dead sticking out. That way it would be easier to perhaps get some succesful interviews in as well, if people thought she was one of them. She was dressed in a black slip on dress that reached ankle length, accompanied by some black Louboutin look-a-likes. The real deal was way too expensive for her salary, but she hoped no one would care that much about her attire. She kept her makeup simple and adorned a small, silver necklace with a stone pendant. This was the fanciest party she had ever attended so she felt a bit of nerves as she tried to blend in.

The party had been alright so far, Holden's speech being a highlight for sure. So far she had had a few small conversations with people she didn't recognise. She assumed most people here knew she was new, and talked to her because of that. Small town people being bored and whatnot, needing new stimuli where ever they could find it. She swore this time she wouldn't get as tipsy as she did at the wake, and had only had the entry glass of champagne she had been offered when she came. If she remained sober enough, it was only a matter of time before every one else became drunk and her chances increasing of them letting loose and spilling some details.

With a champagne glass in hand, Riley made a run for it. She could feel eyes watching her as she exited the mansion. It was cool out, and the misty air made the extravagant garden look haunted. She wasn't one for landscaping, but this was something else. Two koi ponds, flowers she'd never seen before and more statues than she cared to count. She took a sip of champagne as she strode down the pathway. It was soothing, walking by herself, letting herself think and for once, not about work.

She found refuge on a bench. The view was pretty, you could see the lake and an impressive boat by the dock. She took another sip. The flavor was so sharp, she could feel it almost burning her lips. That burning sensation of liquor brought back memories she'd promised herself to bury.

Escaping reality by drinking it away, she was familiar with the concept. Her father, whom she no longer had contact with, was an alcoholic. She counted herself lucky despite his bad habits, he'd never abuse anyone but the bottle. But it was worse, in a way. Seeing him waste away before her eyes, Riley imagined being hit would be less painful. She didn't really hear from him anymore, when her mother had gathered enough strength to kick whatever he'd turned into out, Riley was sure he wasn't capable of making anything of himself. He was probably under some bridge burning.

She finished her glass and let the sound of waves clear her mind.

Holden felt like an eagle looking for its prey as he strutted around the great rooms. There were too many people, and he soon decided to set up camp by the fireplace, hoping Lou would eventually show up. He was approached by some of his father's old friends. They were drunk, but in a charming way. Well, to him it was charming. He'd imagine their wives thought otherwise judging by their irked glances.

"How's Los Angeles treating you?", One of them asked, handing him a glass of scotch.

"Better than o'l Woody Creeks I bet", another one chimed in.

"Creeks has it charm," Holden said, only to be diplomatic "but Los Angeles is, well, the city of angels", he finished, earning a loud chuckle from the small crowd forming in front of him.

"How's the firm doing? Your father told us about it", One of them asked. Holden closed his mouth. He realized it was probably some lie his father had made up, he had a habit of doing things like that. Holden remembered the day he denied the offer to work at his father's company. He remembered the fear of being cut off for his lack of ambition. Holden's father had been disappointed, but in the end, it didn't really matter that his son was content with the comfortable life his trust fund granted him. His father could still indulge himself by lying about his son's success.

"It's doing alright. Could you excuse me just for a moment?", he asked. Talking to his father's friends as if they were his felt morbid. As if he was trying to be his father. It made him question himself, did he truly want to fill his father's shoes? The answer seemed obvious as he finished the glass of scotch.

After a while scouring the party, speaking with a few random guests but getting no information of importance, Lou finally spotted Holden, looking like he was escaping another conversation. Relieved as she saw him, as she now had a familiar face to talk to, she quickly followed him, and snuck up on his side. "Found you!" She said, jokingly. "Having a good party?"

Lou had already finished up two drinks and put her glass aside, as she finished up her third. Probably a good time she had found Holden, as she was just tipsy enough now, to approach him without feeling nervous. She wasn't sure why he made her feel nervous, as she really just considered him a rich prick, related to the man she was writing an article about - yet something about him captivated her. And the fact that she was still unsure whether or not he had invited her as a date or as an acquaintance. No matter, she thought, she was here for business.

Miles had been standing in the same corner of the party for quite some time now, and he reached a point where he started feeling a little pathetic. No one there really paid attention to him, and his family had disappeared from him as soon as they entered the mansion. Instead he decided it was probably time to ditch, so he finished up his drink, grabbed his coat and went outside. Before leaving, he stood for a while on the porch and lit up a cigarette. From the porch, however, he spotted a lonely Riley a little walk away from the mansion, sitting on a bench by herself. He hesitated, not knowing whether he should go join or not. He figured he could finish his cigarette, before deciding, so he remained still, smoking and staring at her, while making up his mind.

Approached by Lou, Holden could feel himself come back alive a little. He wondered if that was her appeal to him, the fact that she reminded him of the world outside Woods Creek. His normal life, not this pretend-one where he was one bad day away from wearing his father's old suits and sleeping by his mother's side.

Her questions were always so filled with motive. At first, Holden assumed she was just a passionate journalist. But he sensed, after a while, there was something else. The narcissistic side of him wanted to attribute it to their chemistry, and of course, his undeniable charm. He set down his glass and enjoyed a quick scan of her choice of clothing. Expensive, but not in an obnoxious way. She was trying to fit in - and despite having her work cut out for her, she managed pretty well.

"I've never lied to you Lou, and I won't start tonight. I'm having a dreadful time.", He confessed, hoping she'd feel enough pity to stick by his side throughout the evening, completely ignoring the fact that his ex wife would hate him for it. "How you holding up?"

_

Riley was stuck in her own world for a while, but a light breeze revealed the smell of smoke. And where there is smoke, there is Miles. She sighed, turning around would mean acknowledging his presence. That meant awkward small talk until one or both left the festivities, and for some reason, Riley intended to stay. She wasn't enjoying her stay at the mansion by any means - but she knew what laid ahead. The next morning she would have to go into work, and stare at those empty folders that were supposed to be filled with leads, with the whole force breathing down her neck.

At least here, she could pretend it all didn't exist. Another sip of champagne and her glass was empty. She was feeling it get to her head - the diner-sandwich and black coffee diet had failed her.
