The Cahill maison had a different vibe as Ian Kabra walked through the front door. After his sister, Natalie, died he hadn’t been able to gather up enough courage to come back and see her again. He wasn’t planning to stay any longer than he had to and he had a feeling that was the better way.
He walked through the living room and into the kitchen where Amy and Dan’s au pair, Nellie, rapidly worked on her signature chicken soup. It smelt delicious. If only I was staying, he thought. Ian awkwardly stepped up to the kitchens table. Nellie looked up and smiled.
“Hello, Ian,” her smile grow as she spoke. “Looking for Amy?”
He nodded ever so slightly, embarrassed and nervous. Nellie held her wooden spoon up towards the ceiling. The attic. Without a word he strolled out of the kitchen and headed for the stairs.
“Jake is with her!” Nellie called to him. Great, this only makes the visit even more uncomfortable.
Ian jogged up the stairs and found Dan coming out of his sister’s room.
“Ahem!” he coughed getting his attention. The thirteen-year-old looked up from a pink glittery book, whipping the smirk off his face instantly.
“What are you doing here, Cobra?” Dan said surprised by his visitor. Ian sighed not able to explain. Dan looked into Ian’s amber eyes and knew exactly what he was going to do. His smirk reappeared.
“Good luck, man. You’ll need it.” He said stalking into his room, eyes back on the book. Ian stared at the spot he had been standing in. Snap out of it Ian, you have to do this a little voice in his head told him. He shook his head and began walking down the hall. As he walked he thought about everything that had happend to him, the clue hunt, Korea, Vespers and everything else. What did it take to bring a guy down?
He reached the door to the attic and took a deep nervous breath. He slowly lifted his hand to the door’s knob before the door opened.
Jake Rosenbloom dropped a small gadget from his hands when he looked straight into Ian’s eyes. Ian and Jake didn’t have the best of relationships now-a-days. Jake is Amy’s boyfriend and he knows that Ian has a crush on her for years. Amy had been with another guy who bravely died for her when a bomb had been hidden in her old home. After his death she just went straight to Jake, leaving Ian crushed. Jake picked up his gadget and headed out the door greeting Ian as he passed. Ian waited for Jake to be out of sight before he walked through the old door.
The attic was full of high-tech equipment and the back wall full of mini computers. Siting at one of those computers was none other than Amy Cahill. She was reading The DaVinci Code which Ian knew was probably the 60 th time. He tapped on the table getting her attention. She tore her eyes away from the book and looked into his eyes. When she did she nearly dropped it.
“I-Ian? W-w-what are you d-doing here?” she stuttered. He couldn’t help but smile. He slowly walked up to her and sat in the chair next to her.
“You called me here remember?” he asked. It was true; she had sent him a letter knowing he couldn’t refuse. Amy looked away, ashamed.
“Love, why am I here? You have Jake, why am I here?” he couldn’t bear to say his name but he know it was the only way. When Amy didn’t say anything he continued.
“You think I want to be here? My mother disowned us, my sister died, my father is in hiding and –“she cut him off.
“How do you think the rest of us feel? Uncle Alistair, Sinead, Lester? We all lost someone we love!” she shot back. Moment of truth, he thought.
“I lost the love of my life twice, Amy, I can’t bear to see you with another guy anymore. I did what I did for you but I can’t do this anymore.” He didn’t want to know what came next. He couldn’t. He got up from his seat and walked out of the attic, down the stairs, through the kitchen and living and out the front door. He wanted to leave, before he changed his mind, but something was keeping him from getting back in the car and driving off.
What have I done?
