Besides everything by Tolkien, I would highly recommend books by Terry Pratchett! Especially the discworld-series

There is a movie adaption of Stardust that is pretty decent, if you want to check it out. But, Neil Gaiman has an unique style to his writing, so I prefer the book :-)) Also, Coraline is amazing. Both the book ( by Gaiman), and the movie.
