I think perhaps the idea was to encourage users to look at and potentially buy old items while searching for the new ones, but some sections have 16+ pages and forcing your users to wade through every single one checking for new items is just rude. And you have to consider the probability that instead of encouraging users to buy old items, you're discouraging users from bothering to search for the new ones.
