they could add this by making a list of items you got on and being able to drag or +/- those. as in a list or layers you often see in editing software. wouldnt be impossible to do but i can understand it might be rough to change from the current system

I would consider it a "necessity" since "dress up" is a major feature of this game and the current system limits possibilities, and I know that this have been asked for for over 5 years now!
