But whatever. That's not what I'm here to write about.
I find it really interesting how you could basically make the comparison of them being "jhonnys" (japanese male idols) since their success is based on being "innocent" and wholesome... but just sexual enough to make the fangirls go "oooooOooOohhhh. "
There's loads of things you can like about them ofc, like Dan's humor and Phil's out of this world imagination.
But as they get older and "more professional like" they do the exact thing idols from ex japan does/did. More and more.
- Being very private about their personal life. Like. Super private. (if you compare them to other youtubers it's much harder to find things out. There's no "here's all of phil's personal information videos" that I've seen at least. )
-They keep the sexual stuff to a minimum. Just hinting on sexual stuff. But never reeeaaalllyyy talking about it.
- Swearing? ....Trying not to. Trying to speak very in-offensive in general.
- Being a good role model! No smoking, no drinking. Keep in school and don't do drugs.
- Having a pretend "relationship" with the fans. Talking about how important "you guys are" and how they really really care about you. (I'm not saying they don't really, I'm just saying this is also really important for idols in general.)
- Not being part of drama or slandering of other youtubers.
I'm starting to think that youtubers like them are basically western-world idols. Boybands are also ofc like this bc they are actually the fucking same thing as "jhonnys" japan was just one of the first countries to develop that kind of culture. But it's really interesting that something as being a youtuber can be the same thing.
I wonder if they know what they're doing or if it's more like a product of "well this didn't work so well... let's try this!!" if you watch older videos of them they're much more crude and sexual. Still cute. But comparing them to the "today" videos it's like, very weird to watch honestly?
How "aware" of this do you think Dan and Phil are?
