I love her, but ia. I've heard a few songs from A Star is Born and idg people commenting 'her voice is incredible!'. like, it's nice in pop songs but that's about it i think

fiona apple is criminally underrated.

I wish she were as popular as Adele and Lana Del Rey, but at the same time I think her music is more interesting, free, sincere and deeply personal due to her hatred of the spotlight. She wants to make art and doesn't care what others think of it. It makes for some of the most relateable songs I've ever heard in my entire life.

Also on that note, Never is a Promise sucks.

It's the only song she's ever released that I don't like. She typically averts the cutesy, sappy sweet female trope but just embraces it so fully in that one. I can't. I'll listen to Adele if that's what I want (and I do like Adele.)

I got into her because she takes emotion and shows the sheer power and strength it contains. She may be feminine, but she can bite. I love it.

Tidal made her famous. She didn't like the limelight so she made a very controversial speech during the VMAs and destroyed her fame. Her subsequent albums were less accessible and didn't do as well commercially. To be fair she doesn't want to be a celebrity, and I guess it's nice because there's such an authenticity and sincerity to what she does that Adele and Lana lack. Lana and Adele want hits. Fiona doesn't really care.

When the Pawn... blew Tidal out of the water. It didn't sell nearly as well. It's also so much better. I wish it got as much attention as Tidal did. I know my mom loved Tidal but hated When the Pawn... and I don't quite get it. It's filled with emotion and more experimental. The Idler Wheel... received rave reviews but definitely didn't catch on like Tidal did, though to be fair that's what Fiona wants I think. She's happy with her extremely loyal cult following.

I was like so obsessed with her when I was 15 Louisa and a camp counselor was like, "omg fiona? haven't heard that name since 1997." He didn't even know she had two other releases at the time. lol.
