I'm having the same thoughts. ESC is Europe's thing, and the more contestants, the harder it gets for every country to advance to the finale. 
However, there are already countries in ESC that are not placed in Europe, for example Armenia and Azerbajdzjan (gosh, so hard to spell). So on the other hand, why not Austrailia? 
But if Austrailia would win, that would mean that everyone who wants to see the shows irl has to travel aaaall the way to Austrailia... And every country in Europe is far from Austrailia. Then it is a different thing with e.g. Armenia.
