Boo!

I hope you are all having a spook-tacular time. The 31st of October is coming up within too long, and therefore it is time for an uncanny competition! Halloween is the perfect time to scare and frighten, and what better way to do so than through storytelling?

I bet most of us know of some scary stories and literary pieces, but this year we want to be surprised! Therefore we have decided to set up a writing competition for all of you creepy creatures of VP . . .

The task is simple - Write a hair-raising short story in which you must include the following:

An encounter with a black cat

The rest is up to you! You can pick any setting, the rest of the plot, any narrator type etc. Let your imagination run wild!

Rules:
Your story must be completely written by you
You are only allowed to enter with your main account
Don't edit your post, if you want to make changes then delete the old entry
Your story needs to be a max. of 275 words and a min. of 125 words
You can check your word count here

Deadline:
You have until the 11th of October 23:59 GMT+2 to post your story
You can check the current GMT+2 here

Prizes:

The winners will receive these meow-tastic sets by Allie!

. . . This time around we also have a small, secret participation prize by Allie for everyone who joins the event, so don't forget to do so!

Good luck to all of you - we can't wait to read all your stories!

FAQ:

Q1: Why a black cat?
A1: Black cats are a classic Halloween symbol, and they have been objects of superstition for a long time! They are by some considered the bringers of bad (and good) luck, and we figured it works perfect as an omen and/ or as foreshadowing in storytelling.

Q2: How will the competition be judged?
A2: I will ask people to keep certain factors in mind during voting - mainly just the story itself; whether it hits the ghost-story/ scary story/ mystical, halloween-y feeling, its originality etc. Spelling, grammar etc. won't be high on the list at all but should still be kept in mind a little.

Bhhhrr yeahh last time I hosted a writing comp the max was like 250 words & I realise that was like .. little too low for some, but at the same time everyone on the team (whose available to vote) has to sit and read through all so yeah.. not so easy to find a balance :-;

Do we have to specificaly describe the cat as black? Or can it also be implied by other parts of the story?

Mmm yeah I would say so, or at least dark-furred, as black cats in particular are symbolic of Halloween etc. How you do it is up to you though, so you could for instance just describe the encounter with a cat, and then finish with "then she remembered that the cat she had seen earlier was black, and suddenly it all made sense" or something like that.. Hopefully my explanation & example makes sense
