What better interpretation of heartbreak than Cupid's very own heartbreak?
In Greek and Roman Mythology, Cupid (Eros) is known to have fallen in love only once, with a mortal called Psyche. Although retellings differ, it is common in all that the beautiful mortal Psyche unknowingly gets married to the love god Cupid. She never sees the face of her husband. Her sisters talk her into believing that her husband is a monster and one night, Psyche shows up with a dagger and light in Cupid's chambers. As the light touches Cupid's beautiful complexion, Psyche is both shocked and relieved. Her relief doesn't last long as Cupid wakes up to his first and greatest heartbreak. He utters "love cannot reside where there is no trust" as he flies away.
