I feel like these comps are a way for designers to challenge themselves and to go ahead and post designs that they might not post otherwise. It's one of the few places where you can show a skin that might not be amazing and it's still ok because everyone else is showing theirs too. And you get a prize for your efforts so it balances out the scariness of putting yourself out there.
