Summer. The air was warm and sickly, smothering itself like a blanket, leaving people breathless. Doctor Losewich grinned to himself and stroked his moustache slowly. The crowds were gathering around the tent, little children strained their eyes wide with excitement and their parents nervously tapped their feet. Doctor Losewich’s Curious Show of Oddities was proving to be a star attraction, mostly due to the curiosity hidden in the tent. The cane which Doctor Losewich perched himself upon was sumptuously adorned with a gold lion head and the stick itself was painted black. Doctor Losewich was an old man. He had a hunchback and his hair was starting to grey. His shoes were ill fitting, tight around his arthritic toes. But Doctor Losewich knew he was going to die a rich man. In his many years, Doctor Losewich had achieved many great things; he had become a business man at a young age, he had found and lost love, he had tamed wild animals…but now – Doctor Losewich grinned a little bit more and wrinkles deepened in his face – now, he had achieved the greatest feat of all.
There had been many talks of creatures of the deep, many foolish men who had attempted to find them. These men were imbecilic and were pulled into the depths, lured by the beauty of the sea. Doctor Losewich was not as naïve as these men. He was old and wise.
A small man with a limp appeared, grunting as he acknowledged the crowd. He glared at the children and uneasily readjusted his eye patch before nodding at Doctor Losewich. He moved slowly towards the tent, his head disappearing behind a flap of material before pulling it back out. Doctor Losewich grinned even further and took a step forward.
“Welcome, welcome everybody. I am Doctor Losewich, man of the world. I have travelled far and wide, over the land and through the seas, risking my life to find great wonders of the natural world. This is my Curious Show of Oddities for one night only. And now, it is my greatest pleasure to introduce you to my most treasured oddity.” Doctor Losewich nodded at the small man, who pulled the plastic flap of the tent wider, to reveal the inside. There were gasps, there was a murmur of excitement which buzzed in the air and the crowd made their way inside. In the middle of the tent was a tall glass box, supported by thick brown rope, fastened to rusty metal hooks. The box was filled with water, something floated inside.
“Introducing Athena, my mermaid,” bellowed Doctor Losewig, raising his arms and tapping his cane on the box. The mermaid turned. A woman screamed, leaving silence hanging in the air. The mermaid was pushing on the box, throwing herself at the box, trying to escape her glass cage. Her tentacles curled furiously, frightening the crowd. Doctor Losewig laughed. Indeed, this was his greatest capture. And she was going to make him an incredibly rich, old man.
