bee wrote: get these kind of knitting needles... rundpinde? idk what theyre called in english, but much easier than having to work with four at once theres specific yarn for socks that usually have a mix of polyamide in them so they last longer, bc you know walking in them and stuff. just look for sock yarn/sock wool also if youre feeling brave, check out stoneknits on ig, she makes the most gorgeous socks + patterns for them

Alam wrote: Omg yasss okay so mostly you're gonna need a pair of circular needles. You could use dpns (double pointed needles) but they're honestly less versatile for the types of projects you can make with them. Some people prefer them though, it's about trial and error. Usually socks are knit with fingering weight yarn (weights of yarn don't actually measure the weight of them, it just means thickness or gauge) so you're gonna want to use anywhere from 2.25mm to 3mm needles, depending on the pattern and your tension (though you don't have to worry too much about your tension if you're just starting out). With socks you really have two options with circular needles, one being magic loop, which is really helpful to know anyway, and 23cm circulars, which are really short little circular needles that go around the circumference of the whole sock. They can be a bit uncomfortable to work with for some people and you can't really use them for much else. I recommend if you're gonna buy circulars to buy interchangeable circulars. You can buy individual needles and chords as you need them, you don't need a whole set but it's gonna save you a lot in the long run because you won't need to buy 5 pairs of a single size just to have the right length. If you want needle recommendations I can help with that too, I've tried 3ish brands by now and have strong opinions. As for yarn, you're gonna want it to have around a 20-25% nylon or polyamide content for the socks to last. You can knit socks out of 100% natural fibres, usually it's done with really rustic wool, but the nylon really helps with longevity. For patterns I recommend you go with something simple to start with. The site Ravelry is my go to, I can spend hours browsing that damn site lmao. You can filter for language, yarn weight, free patterns, number of colours used, needle size, design features etc. Personally I don't love a wedged toe, I find them uncomfortable. Also I really love knitting a shadow wrap short-row heel, they're really fun and look sick. This video is great for that if you're interested.
Alam wrote: Oh also with yarn you're really lucky to live in Scandinavia where a lot of really good yarn brands are. Drops, Sandnes Garn and Filcolana are three well known, good quality and affordable brands. I've only tried Filcolana, specifically their Arwetta which is actually a sock yarn and it's terrific. It's superwash and has 25% (I think) nylon but it feels really like, neutral? It doesn't feel as smooth as other superwash yarns but it's not scratchy at all, I love it. It comes in many many colours and is about 5 pounds I think? For 210 metres which is about what you'd need for a pair of not too long socks.
