When I was having group work at uni the lesbians I got grouped with talked about it n apparently the books is like meant to be very femenist for its time n about escaping ur abuser n whatnot so I don’t even think it’s entirely about it sucking which it also seems to do, but about how it was not the right book to adapt into a kink re-imagining n apparently the director has had some very questionable ideas before

i sat there like damn I thot people were complaining bc the fashion wasn’t historically accurate or smth not THAT

Yes they discussed that too, it was a very good convo to overhear because now I know all I need to know about that movie from someone who has both read n watched n I didn’t have to do either loool
