I would say the election in germany in 2005 was the first news event that stood out, because my parents really hated gerhard schröder and everyone was happy here when angela merkel was elected.

I remember the days following it, I was talking a lot to a girl from the same county (fylke) as me, she was very worried about one guy he knew of from the same place and he was among the 5 last people to be identified : ( 
To this day I'm more emotionally attached to that name than any other others, thinking about it literally fills my eyes with tears because I know how much he meant to people. Those stories exist about every single person who was there, the combined sorrow and loss .. I don't think we will ever fully understand.
