Well, before college I only ever had 2 jobs, one as a file clerk on school breaks, and one as a barista.
When I got to college, I went to a school that required work study, so in the four years I was there, I had three jobs, recycling center, sustainability events & training coordinator, and packing house lead on a farm
After graduation is when I really started job hopping, because it's really hard to find work where I live, I also live in a right-to-work state, so I can be fired for no reason at all (which happens) I also burn out really fast and lose my cool and quit jobs on the fly (under assessment for ADHD and mood disorders to figure this one out)
gig-work is also really common where I live, lots of folks I know work their ass off in the summer, and live off their earnings in the winter. I've done lots of gig work, so I've had tons of jobs but some of them only lasted a week, or a season, etc.
And I volunteer a lot. Sometimes the folks I volunteer with can cut me a paycheck for a certain task (for example making spreadsheets of local businesses for a fundraising team) but when it comes to like, showing up at an event and working the snack booth, packing up tents, or being hospitality for musicians, I usually work for free. However one time when I was doing hospitality one of the musicians hired me and paid me for a ride to the airport.
wow
i've had two jobs both of which i was/have been at for more than two years (2.5 years at high school job, 2 years to present currently)
what is it you want to work at/work at currently?
Right now, I'm in a weird transitional period. I have received 2 artist enrichment grants, totaling close to $10,000, an organization has chosen to invest heavily in my craft because they think I have something to offer the world - I am a textile artist, specifically needlework, I do embroidery, textile mending, etc. They've paid me to get better, so I can hopefully make something of myself later on as a self employed artist.
I am also on a "Teaching Artist" roster, where schools can contract me to do an art lesson that aligns with their curriculum (I was JUST put on the roster a few weeks ago so I haven't gotten any contracts yet, but I do strong history connections)
I also received a grant in 2019 to teach a feminist embroidery school for middle and high school girls, and I've just applied for 3x the amount of money to try and turn it into a more sustainable program.
A woman I have done lots of gig work and music work with is currently starting a nonprofit designed to connect artists to people who can help make their ideas a reality, and connect artists to each other, and I am on the board of directors (or, well, when the IRS finishes that paperwork lol) There's possible money that will come from that project somewhere.
Before Covid, I was doing mostly the same stuff, but I also had a part-time job working 20 hours a week for $10 an hour in a local art gallery, and it was really nice to have something like that I could count on, when all my other work is so up-in-the-air. I'd love to have something easy like that again but it is very unlikely.
Basically since early 2020 I've been cut big checks by nonprofits and had to budget well to make them last. I was also on unemployment on-and-off for a year after losing my job due to covid, so that combined with really cheap rent, I was able to save enough to kind of float on - which is great because I'm not physically well and it's given me some breathing room to get some medical care and rest while I work on my art.
Basically there was no room at the table for me, I kept getting hired and fired from jobs, I'm no good in capitalist settings.
