I don't like over-dramatic things, which they often do for historical pieces because history has to be *exciting* (which it doesn't but I guess most people wouldn't care for it without the drama)
like I don't mind creative liberties and such, I know not to take my facts unchecked from an entertainment piece, but it either has to have a comedic purpose for me to accept unneeded drama or it has to be "realistic" enough to be considered a normal looking thing
(don't know if you've seen Phantom Thread, but all the ratings when it came to the movies said that it was just really boring but I liked it for its simplicity and its way of just wanting to show one thing instead of being this over-reaching all achieving movie about a designer)

I don't think it is overdramatic bc it has quite a long story to tell in such a short time but it's a while since i watched itĀ

I really like the story about Mary in general (I've read a few stories about it and also watched the opera, which I really liked)

you have to agree, there is this kind of magical feeling americans try to catch when portraying europe and european cultures and because they don't understand it, it always ends up looking like just utter satire no matter how genuine they try to be. it's like with musicals. once you manage to suspend your disbelief, you will be able to find joy in it.
