I have the physical copy and the audiobook, but I'm just not swept up by anything. I thought the first chapter was probably the most interesting, and until he started learning his first languages. The commentary is nice because I don't know much of that history so it add depth to it. But I'm sorta just waiting for something that attach me to the character(s) so far because I'm not engaged
Oh! Then it might just not be your kind of book. I don't really think the characters get much more interesting or a change in dynamic. More action and political themes do pop up however.
I have this thing where I'm like "I love dark academia" but also I don't like the reading experience at all. I just think I want to like dark academia more than I do. And the book is a brick! And I think it just doesn't vibe with me right now since I've been failing to commit to any book for months due to uni work and just being stressed out and overwhelmed. I might have to take it up in summer when things are chiller. (I do love Vita Nostra tho)
Your opinion on books really change depending on when you read them, so it might be a good idea to wait. Stressing periods usually call for easy to digest books as well, and Babel isn't that unfortunately.

I like the concept of dark academia, but it's really been hit or miss with the ones I've read. I liked A Deadly Education (only the first two though) but I dnf'ed The Atlas Six.

The truth of my relationship with dark academia:

Books I've read\tried to read + rating:
* The Secret History ⭐⭐⭐\5
* Vita Nostra ⭐⭐⭐⭐4.5\5
* The Goldfinich DNF
* Babel DNF\PAUSED
* If We Were Villains DNF on page 3 bc I don't like Shakespear at all
* The Atlas Six ⭐⭐⭐⭐ \ 5
* Ninth House ⭐⭐\5
* A Deadly Education ⭐⭐⭐⭐\5
* Gallant DNF

Not that categorizing DA is super easy so this is the selection I made, and it's like most of them where just slow meh's. The best one writing wise was the secret history and I'm glad I have read it because it is good in retrospect. But The Atlas Six was the easiest one to read (the indie published version), but Vita Nostra was the one that blew me away.

Then there's a lot of DA books with cool titles that I don't like the summary of so they are just off the selection list of potential reads.

Allegedly I'm heading toward the Zodiac Academy-series rn. Idk what it is about but ppl love it so I'm just gonna jump on the hype and hope that it is that sort of teen series that is easy to digest

I honestly feel the slow meh for dark academia. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't, and most of the time it's determined by the plot surrounding the setting.

The magicians is probably also DA, and that's the worst shit I've ever read wtf.

Feel like I've spent the last handful of years trying to read more serious, grown-up books, but I need to read more funny books now.

Like this one where the cover makes me feel happy and gives me Updraft by Fran Wilde vibes

By Lev Grossman. It's advertised as "Harry Potter for grown ups" and also has a tv series, but it turns into Narnia halfway through the first book and the only scene I remember was them turning into swans and flying north.
