he's not BAD at the game. He prolly isn't championship level to start but it's more a matter of no confidence and little experience (he's like 14-15 right?) than that he straight sucks. The Yugi's learn a lot from each other throughout the series (the ending is what i watched most recently so tbf that might be coloring my opinions). He does have duels he has to do by himself and tbf he does learn a lot from yami (maybe more than reverse about dueling specifically). I won't spoil the ending of the series but that wouldn't be possible if he just sucked even if he did learn a lot from being w/ yami. People who suck can spend years with masters and still barely scrape by.
tbf i might say i like yami better cause cooler backstory and he's... sexy.... but i guess i find normal yugi relatable and that's why i don't get sometimes why people hate on characters with no self confidence because he's a lot more relatable than yami to me. 

(this series is a childhood staple for me, i'm not actually mad)

also...since you're starting at the beginning, isn't it so crazy how extreme and cheesy the start is like "rich kid kidnaps classmates gpa so he'll play with him, then rich adult kidnaps kid's gpa so he'll play w/ him" with no adult supervision for high school kids, all intensely before anything is explained so like if you don't know what's happening it's actually insanely funny and makes no sense
