i had like two cavities when i was 16 and had a hard time with that mentally bc i thought that i was the worst and awful for allowing myself to get a cavity but like... a lot of people get cavities. oh man but the dentist who was filling them i guess forgot how the numbing stuff works bc she injected it and didnt want til i was numb and just started drilling and asked me to like raise my hand or something if it hurt so i raised my hand a bunch and she put more and more in and then FINALLY she left to let it sit and finished up but now my jaw was like suuuuuper numb and it felt really weird.
the first part is me totally, i had my first cavity like a month ago and i just cried the entire way home. it was also my first experience w/ a new dentist/place... my old place always said i did good taking care of teeth. this dentist was good w/ numbing but then after she gave me the whole speel about taking care of my teeth and i said i did that all and she just looked at me like she thought i was lying... and then i was like afraid to eat for the next week cause i was like "it's just gonna ruin my teeth, what's the point..."

also... the tooth they filled just started getting sensitive again so idk. she said it might not work to fill the cavity so... i might have to get it done again. i assume next is root canal and i really don't think i can do that...

oh ps fun story once my old densist was gonna crown a teeth (not b/c cavity) and they started numbing the wrong one and i had to remind them it was the other side. they were like "are you sure?" and i said yes n they checked and were like "oh ya ok"
nooo do not fret it is not as bad as it sounds like ahhah
I've had 3 root canals filled nd it's not bad! just different instruments that mite seem a lil scary but all in all ur life gonna b soooo much better if it actually needs a root filling
also don't b afraid to ask if u can listen to music! it's very allowed to have headphones on while at dentist then u get a different focus than just layin there waitin for them to do their job

good to know and appreciate the encouragement for the operation! here's the thing though...
(legit don't feel u have to read this all, i'm just whining)

my family kinda walks both side of the fence when it comes to mainstream and alternative medicine y'know? We tend to try and do some of both as works best... root canals to alternative medicine theory are a BIG NO. i'd have to research more to give you an exact why (maybe best i don't rn, i don't wanna worry you sad )but like mainstream med's only alternative is pulling the tooth. other alternatives are extremely specialized, rare, expensive, and not covered by insurance (ofc).

and i've heard people across multiple sides of mainstream and alt medicine say it's lowkey known to the med industry that root canals aren't super healthy but like it's the norm and what people expect and train in so... other routes or improvements aren't really encouraged (thanks insurance/big business).

so like i know lots of people get them and don't have major complications or anything but.... having to figure out myself whether i should trust mainstream med when they rarely give me reasons to want to.... *sigh*

so now if they do say they want to do that i have to go research how bad/likely or whether i should just get my tooth pulled and like...this isn't my job?? and like i love science and i'm not like super hippie/anti vax or anything w/ medicine but also my family n me dabble in both because we've all had bad experiences w/ mainstream...

sorry u didn't ask for this dump
I guess it all comes down to what u feel like in the end!
is it the expensive part that concerns u
that like
idk bcus pulling the tooth out is a final decision u kno, while gettin the root canal can save it for many years to come
nd if it don't work out u can always pull it afterwards
or is it like a chemical thing u r afraid of or more just the fact they're tryin to scam u into gettin a root canal
or do u have another alternative on the alt med side

oops i wasn't ignoring u i just uh... went and read manga and yeah...

basically, there's the potential (likelihood varies greatly from source to source i've seen so far) that at least some of the bacteria can't be cleaned out (due to texture/structure of tooth inside). it can then multiply freely since most of the living defenses are removed in a root canal (the pulp and nerve), there isn't a lot your body can do (pulp inside is where living/immune system part is) and you won't really be able to tell since it's now insensate (less/no nerve left). it can then slowly grow and leak the bacteria out (kind of like think of a smaller, less serious appendix situation) into your body which can cause infectious around the area or general stress/exacerbation on your body in the future after the infection has had time to grow.

best alt is tooth removal and get implant... it is true i could do that after a root canal if it does get infected but since it can be hard to tell if it's infected and have a general, low level negative effect on the body that's hard to diagnose, idk if it'd be worth it. tooth removal + implant (if needed, idk if i'd bother cause $ if it wouldn't effect my health to just have a hole in the back) would be cheaper and easier to get than an alt medicine treatment, so i'd be between that and root canal i think. but you are right, that is a very final decision and idk what the dentist would think if i said just pull it no root canal. and idk what their opinions would be.

and i've only done very basic research so far so i need to read more about both sides before i can decide for sure. Idk if I would characterize root canal as a scam, more of an.... outdated model that should be improved upon but no one bothers. but then maybe what i read that says root canal is bad is overly paranoid and... research is hard when it really matters what you research irl vs a school paper. none of the sites i've first glanced at make me trust them super a lot and life is too hard man why can't things just make sense

Yes I c I c *takes notes*

Rough! I guess for me decision was easier I didnt grow up in that kinda household, nd Ive also had so many cavities that the dentist is my crutches nd I trust em w my life like I feel bad makin them have to work so much on me aaahahahah

R there like, statistics of root canal like, bacteria awfullness
Mby it is bcus Im not a dentist or read abt this at all but idk how they can find a better way to treat root canals if they wanna preserve the tooth gigglglgllg the only option I see is actually just pullin it but that's also SO expensive if u wanna get an implant
All I kno is Ive had 3 root canals nd never had any problems, even when I thiut for sure "god theyre gonna have to pull this one" they saved it, have not felt any pain or discomfort since!

R there any alt medical treatments for a root canal kinda cavity
I think even if I was fully on alt med kinda thout Id end up gettin a root canal filled bcus omg those bitches will start hurting Ive called the dentist CRYING u cant live w it

i feel like it would be hard to have direct statistical studies like "increase smoking > increase cancer" for this (and a lot of alt medicine) because they're not saying you will for sure get an infection, but more of a low grade effect that can manifest in various ways. Like, you could test stress on immune system at time points after, but so many things also affect immune system function (sickness, being around sickness, lifestyle, sleep, mental/emotional stress, diet, ect.) so idk if they could *prove* a causation, maybe a correlation. plus the fact that people have such different systems and reactions to stressors...

digression: if you haven't noticed, i'm kinda into this topic. if you want to tell me to shut up and go away, feel free, i won't be offended. i might keep talking forever otherwise

back to topic: too late, i will now start citing academic journals
(pls don't read all these unless u want to, i'm in the zone and this is now my research dump)

according to this paper, it's really common for bacteria to stay in the tooth (like 74% ish) but most of the time it doesn't leave the tooth. This paper talks a lot about linking disease incidence to increased activity in immune system measures, but again, you can't *prove* causation (and it's a pretty small study). It says all patients tested had changes in immune system, but that doesn't necessarily mean it WILL cause xyz symptoms or disease because people have different immune systems strengths/reactions. both mention it would help if dentists would target more specific bacteria vs the more "bulk disinfectant" kind of treatment they use. This paper says 24-65% (what a range!) of treated cases have some level of periodontitis (gum disease) still, But again, does that mean it will manafest and how much? This one additionally brings up the possible issue of heavy metal poisoning (depending on type of filling) and autoimmune correlation, but it's not an academic journal and it's sources are kinda all old so idk...)

(here's an easier to read article that covers some of these concerns, but it is focusing on breast cancer and there is mammogram pics, and it's overall a little more basic/unprofessional/advertise-y)

but then if you look at a lot of the mainstream sites they all say they are perfectly safe. This site says more dental treatment reduces disease and cancer, but the paper it cites seems more to say that leaving disease untreated can increase cancer specifically, which feels a little different? And it seems to me the mainstream sources i've read (here's a few  more) tend to basically cite the same thing the first link in this paragraph (the american association of edonontists). like the exact same argument vehemently repeated (this old 1920's paper is disproven, we see no link). The last one does mention that removal can be more traumatic to surroundings which does seem like a valid concern though. But when mainstream sources cite like one or two things and act like you're stupid if you don't agree, that feels untrustworthy to me.

As for treatments, there are some kind of mainstream things similar to a root canal (here), but they seem similar enough and do bring up chemicals used concerns, so idk if they would be better... There are a few sites i've found with some alternative treatments (some  sites) but they seem to focus mostly on preventative and a couple of treatments that idk if are tested/work like ozone therapy , which seems to be a big one but might not be tested enough and depend on circumstances (this paper) says

ok that's enough research for one post

also ive had root canal done too and idk, it was literally so painfull before because basically my nerve was exposed and eating triggered the worst pain ever. so im glad root canals are an option.
the only thing where i fucked up was that mx ex dentist who did the root canal made it seem like getting a crown on the now dead tooth was optional and not neccesity. so i left it for 2 years and my dead tooth kist cracked off a big piece one day. which then made me go oh shit. my new dentist crowned the bit of my tooth that was left rip. he said it would hold better/longer if there was more tooth left but so far im happy with my crown (now about a year old)
