Watching Mignonnes (Cuties) to see what all the hoopla is about. Only 30 minutes in so I have no opinion on the film itself yet. Regarding the controversy, I do think there is a legitimate conversation to be had about whether or not children should be involved in such explicit content, but that's not what's happening. I find it interesting a movie that dares to critique the sexualization of children (tho if its handled successfully is yet to be seen) creates a moral panic, yet this shit happens on tiktok all the time and no one says shit (though I may be committing whataboutism idk).

The Netflix poster was in poor taste tho.

Ok so its actually a gripping story with brilliant acting and cinematography. I thought it really nailed what many young girls experience. Though I'm unsure about the ethics of it. It may be fictional in context, but actual 11 year olds still twerked in revealing outfits. Is that exploitative? I still don't know

OMG i literally just finished watching it like half an hour ago what r the chances . i agree w u, thought it was a really really good film, made me cry a lot but ya i dont know, im v unsure abt whether or not the incredibly sexually suggestive scenes were 'ok' or not in this context. like v unsure and confused bcuz there is an argument to be made, i think, about how maybe it was necessary for it to be depicted in that way in order to make the point it was trying to make as strongly as possible... i dno. its complicated and i dont wanna straight up b like 'oh no it was totally fine' because i dont exactly feel that way for a number of reasons

but i think 99% of the outrage has been dumb bcuz people are just saying 'this film is evil REMOVE IT from netflix, nobody should be watching it' when like... actually i think a lot of ppl should b watching it bcuz it is a very good film and also has a very good message ? and also instead of getting angry at the director who made the film n netflix n demanding it gets banned or whatever, why arent ppl getting angry at.......how normalised and prevalent the sexualisation of young girls is within our culture/society OUTSIDE of this film ? idk if im making sense

I watched it over the course of about 2-3 days and finished it last night.

You could argue that the director was effective in her mission because the film did create outrage and disgust. It drew attention to the exploitation of children- especially through the internet- so it fulfilled its intentions.

I don't object to the content itself (minus the shitty Netflix marketing). Defenders of Mignonnes have pointed out that the depictions  of injustices in fiction don't necessarily equal advocacy, nor do they always contribute to them. However the girls did twerk in reality, even if it was for a fictionalized role, right? I'm unsure how many of those scenes were stimulated. Is that exploitative, even if the intentions were not malicious? Hmmm. I need to do more research on the casting and production honestly.

It's unfortunate many are arguing in bad faith due to the moral panic. There are some valid concerns revolving the 11-year-old casting, but very few people seem to be taking an honest and objective look.

Idk it's truly a mess I cant wrap my head around

yuh huh . there is a BIG part of me that is like . this was literally like softcore child pornography using real young girls. the thought of men watching that film and viewing them as hot or sexually attractive (which i guarantee a lot of them r doing, even if theyre not '''pedophiles''') is makin me feel very sick . so yeah its a tricky one n i cant wrap mi head around it either

Spoilers for Mignonnes (Cuties):

I gotta say, the scene where one of the girls in the dancing troupe blows up a condom she mistakes for a balloon is brilliant. When the others figure out it's a condom, they condemn the girl and accuse her of having STDs. It really highlights how children are misinformed about sex because they gain their understanding through the media. Adults need to play a larger role in fallictating factual sex information to children and adolescents. It's easier to blame the media rather than consider the role parental figures play in all of this. Perhaps if we played a larger role in educating children than we do sheltering them, they would have a broader understanding and more agency over themselves.

Sadly a lot of detractors seem to miss this point and are blaming "indecency" instead

I dont buy the "pedobait" argument because non-sexual content can also arouse pedophiles. Should we ban scenes of children bathing or consider the episode of The Rugrats where Tommy strips naked child porn? I dont think so. Context matters, and alternate interpretations dont alter the reality of a thing

The problem with Mignonnes is that many of the scenes are explicitly sexual, even if it's fictional and used to illustrate a broader point. Real eleven-year-old girls were used. Is that harmful and exploitative? I'm still trying to figure that out.

I should probably watch Cuties because it's relevant to my dissertation topic lol, but I do wonder what those QAnon people would think if they watched a Catherine Breilliat film or something... lmao

Even from a non-academic standpoint its worth a watch. It's a well-made and compelling story.

I wonder what the qanon supporters think of Taxi Driver myself, tho that's whataboutism lol.

There is a genuine conversation to be had about whether or not the casting was ethical. It's a shame the discourse is being dominated by conspiracy nuts who are arguing in bad faith.

What's your dissertation?

Yes, I think casting minors and getting them to perform suggestive material, and the impact that has on them on a personal level, is probably the biggest ethical question surrounding the movie. All the other objections just seem to be alarmist. Honestly, if Netflix hadn’t used the poster they did (and just used the original poster) it would have just flown under the radar and no one would have cared.

my dissertation is on how female adolescent sexual fantasy is portrayed in the films of Catherine Breillat, primarily through the lens of feminist psychoanalysis

The use of minors still raises red flags even for me, but I think calls for FBI investigations is a bit much. I agree 100% w/ ur other points

Interesting. I've never heard of her b4. Will have to check her out
