There are some very specific exceptions and it may have very well been illegal to fire you, I'm no lawyer but in general it is illegal to fire someone for simply applying for another job.
another thing tho as a worker to look out for- and we're pretty far of topic now- but you can be fired for OTHER shit that the employer just makes up when the reality is that theyre firing you for this. you know?
true, but if you can prove they just looked for a reason to fire you, you can pursue legal actions
like some things you can't get fired for because the law protects you, but it's common practice for bosses to then start looking for things they can fire you that don't need a lot of proof and then it's difficult to claim wrongfull termination
like the laws in Europe in many countries are good when it comes to that, but someone really petty who just wants to see you suffer still has  alot of options if going at it cleverly and you not actively being able to record and track this because you're not aware of it
but those instances are rather rare
This also depends on the jurisdiction and the choice of law for the contract.
Most American states use "at-will" employment, where they literally can fire you because they think your sneeze sound weird or just because they want to. You're only protected against discrimination there.

In most European states it however, your rights as a worker depends on how the employment law looks in your area, and probably most likely also on what your contract says. If there is a non-compete clause in it, then it might also be stated in the clause, that looking for a job at a competitor's place is enough to get fired. In Denmark this is the case, depending on your position. - This wouldn't be okay for a worker "low in the food chain" compared to a worker "on top of the food chain" (which is where I would put admin)
