Title: Mirror

Director: Andrei Tarkovsky

Date: 1975

Plot: A dying man in his forties remembers his past. His childhood, his mother, the war, personal moments and things that tell of the recent history of all the Russian nation.

Fun fact: To create the effect of the wind making waves through the crops in the field outside the cabin in the woods, Tarkovsky had two helicopters land behind the camera and switch on the rotors when he wanted the wind to start.

Title: Singin' In The Rain

Director: Stanley Donen/Gene Kelly

Plot: A silent film production company and cast make a difficult transition to sound.

Fun fact: The script was written after the songs, and so the writers had to generate a plot into which the songs would fit.

i loooove singing in the rain

this is the guy who played the lion in Wizard of Oz. this is one of my favorite dances in any movie ever. Donald Oconnor was a genious.

people talk about the scene where gene kelly dances in the rain but this is the really genious scene in this film.

also, another fun fact, water wouldnt show up on the camera very well so they used milk in the rain during that scene.

gene kelly wore a wool suit. imagine how much the set smelled with the milk soaking into his wool. how hot and gross he must have felt lol.

Title: L'Avventura

Director: Michelangelo Antonioni

Date: 1960

Plot: A woman disappears during a Mediterranean boating trip. During the search, her lover and her best friend become attracted to each other.

Fun fact: The film was censored heavily because of its alleged immorality. Two of the love scenes were considerably edited and others were obscured by on-screen masking devices. Antonioni was officially charged with obscenity and immorality, although the charges were later dismissed.

Title: The Godfather

Director: Francis Ford Coppola

Date: 1972

Plot: The aging patriarch of an organized crime dynasty transfers control of his clandestine empire to his reluctant son.

Fun fact: Marlon Brando wanted to make Don Corleone "look like a bulldog", so he stuffed his cheeks with cotton wool for the audition. For the actual filming, he wore a mouthpiece made by a dentist. This appliance is on display in the American Museum of the Moving Image in Queens, New York.

Title: Le Mepris

Director: Jean-Luc Godard

Date: 1963

Plot: Screenwriter Paul Javal's marriage to his wife Camille disintegrates during movie production as she spends time with the producer. Layered conflicts between art and business ensue.

Fun fact: Producer Joseph E. Levine insisted on the Brigitte Bardot nude scene that opens the film, realizing that it was the only way he could sell a film that he hated.

Title: Rashomon

Director: Akira Kurosawa

Date: 1950

Plot: A heinous crime and its aftermath are recalled from differing points of view.

Fun fact: A very early use of the "hand held" camera technique. This is seen when the camera follows the characters closely through the woods.
