i think its cuz so much was changing SO QUICKLY around that time . and so like if u were born somewhere in the middle between both of them, it doesnt work classifying urself as either. the difference between them is so big because so much changed in the space of like a decade. but idk maybe that applies to all the generations

but like for example me and my little brother are both TECHINCALLY both gen z i think (i was born in 1997, he was born in 2007). but like it seems so wrong that we are both gen z! i always make fun of him for being from the 'tiktok generation' n he just calls me a boomer lol
