but that and what most people say makes me think that people just numb themselves out because they literally have no choice but to try and make the little things matter enough to justify and fulfill their existence because they have nothing else to cling to...

sounds dark, and agree ppl gotta let em be sad and ultimatly get to know themself better. But humans rlly are very very social species which makes good social life a happier life. Study shows pets are stress relief and increases mood.
some ppl live for their pets or family/their children etc and if they make one happy and worth living for i dont see the issue.
i mean, obv. i'm so glad people take comfort in their pets and love them. i'm so happy to come home to my squeaking degu and we talk to each other and plucking my guinea pigs up and kissing their heads. i'm so thankful for animals and pets in particular who put up with me and glad for everyone who has that...
