It's going to take a large while to pull all of this together so like if u want some fast ass answers, I guess yeah just ask or whatever
Not a brand in particular, but Zalando has a "sustainable" option when looking for clothes, and I know they've been called out for it, but some of the brand that pop up if you choose all of the sustainable options are from fast fashion brands (bershka, Monki, bestseller) but it seems to be part of sustainable lines the single brands have.

Would it be a "lesser evil" to buy the sustainable sub-lines compared to buying from x store in general?

oh, also a big issue for me (and that's not just when it comes to sustainability, but it's a whole fashion industry issue) is the lack of clothes I like
especially sustainable brands like to go for the oversized very neutral basic items that basically look like loungewear (and please no one comment about this, I wear fucking jeans as lounge wear, this for me is lounge wear, if it's meant to be comfy, it's loungewear, point) and I just don't enjoy that?
I like business looks, I like frilly clothes, I like the style that reminds you of girly spring - but good luck finding that anywhere else than every 4 years as a 2 week trend or on dropship sites like shein
it's just the worst
Cras is a Danish brand that sells itself on sustainability (idk if it actually is) but they do bright colorful and cute styles.

I sadly live in Germany and most sustainable brands don't sell online (additionally to that I don't buy online because I have a apparently weird body)
I know, I'm limiting myself with that choice, but it's ultimately less stressfull and I need to send back less clothes like that

Oh sad That's fair enough of course.
I honestly understand why you don't buy online. It's such a bother.

I can try to do lists of brands that can fit specific styles or categories and price points?
There are totally a lot of basics out there. I think ofc. strong basics are important, but yeah, you sorta want more than that and not everyone has the same, neutral basics vibe.

When people say spring I always get the reformation vibes and christy dawn but they have a very high price point. I like spring vibes myself so I normally keep my eyes out for it but it's hard to find for sure. It's more like you scavenge and find one piece at x store and another one at x. Nothing collected at a spot. Makes it hard. Maybe Etsy if you filter out the dropshipping.

I love about half of what the reformation has in store
the thing is also that I occasionally fall in love with things in store and then put them on and realise I just look silly in them
if you really want to help out, I'd gladly take a few pictures of what I have in my wardrobe to help clarify the style (and then add in a few things that I would be curious about trying out)
as for price point, I'm going to be honest with you, I don't mind paying 150€ for a dress I'll be wearing for 5 years +
I spend about 200€ every year on clothes (because fast fashion) where most items cost about 40€, so you can calculate how often I buy new clothes and how many
I could stand to spend a tiny bit more than that

also, feel free to tell me the names of the German brands you like, maybe I know some of them or would even like them myself

OKAY I HAVE A LOT TO SAY ON ZALANDO AND THEIR "SUSTAINABLE" FILTER LIKE OH MY
first of all,
the Norwegian name of the filter is "bærekraftighet" (alas "sustainability" but it's not like "this item is sustainable" but more in the vibe of "this item includes something sustainable, it has some level of sustainability to it"... and then you read the product description and the despair has arrived because the filter does approve all fast fashion "sustainable lines" which ofc are in few senses actually sustainable.

Since Zalando mosty is a platform that resells a lot of brands it doesn't rly have to deal too much w "am i a sustainable brand" like it can just retail all the sustainable collections from unsustainable brands and be like "this is sustainable."  It should also be marked that they brand their own line (even&odd) as "sustainable" and it's very sketchy because you can't certify yourself like this unbiased. which is why you always gotta look at what they put into the word "sustainable" -- the use of this word is so vague, you always gotta check the description for the particular brand or site!

when it comes to the sustainability of the garment itself
- if it has something that is done better for the environment - has recycled fibers, deadstock, uses materials like linen, hemp, lycosell or organic textiles. That's great! It does have a tiny positive impact on the environment. however, it still is not an ethical garment... it is likely produced under the same conditions as the rest of the clothes from the same brand. and it is still not an ethical or sustainable brand, because everything else is produced with bad practices. so like yeah sure, I'm all for people choosing the more sustainable options in stores even if they are a greenwashing scheme because if the option is to pick the regular item in-store, I consider that a step-down.
- however, you really gotta look at the composition of the garment.  h&M or someone launched a collection with 2% recycled fibers..it's literally a joke. and i'm like, sorry that garment is winning the greenwashing olympics of 2022 and i would literally buy anything else.

- you also have to consider other factors on the purchase itself, e.g.
* how often are you going to use it?  how many times do you see yourself using it and for what?
* what purpose do you want this item to have in your life, and does the material choice reflect this purpose\usage?
* do you need it in the first place?
* does it contain mixed fibers or is it 100% one type of fibers (mixed can't be recycled)
* is it natural fibers, if so, is it new, conventional cotton? (then it's not really that great)
* what are your needs now and will they change in near future (around a year)? (no need buying a lot of expensive clothes now if you know you're gonna grow out of them in a few months. to take my own example, I am working on againing weigh so I normally size up if I'm between sizes because I know I will grow and I want what I buy now to still be usable in that future. I also do have this stance on trying new stuff like if you're not sure if you will like a new fit for clothing you're getting, don't go invest in something expensive. get something from fast fashion or secondhand and try it out. if you are sure that you do love it, save up and invest in a piece you love for when it wears out.)

some random tip:
what I do when I check the brands I'm interested in on sites like Zalando,  I go to the brand's original site and read up on the brand there. the production and composition of a garment are more important than if I bought it from zalando or their og store. I also take the sizing graphs from there because the retail site usually has a standardized one that often doesn't fit the actual garment they are selling. also, I always look for cm\measurements and read comments on fit and sizing to try to make an assessment if this will actually fit me and my body type.

I will look at the comments later because I just spent my entire day on this. Gonna fail this exam on Friday, which is ironic because half of it is actually about stuff like biopiracy, conservation of water, resilience and vulnerability during disasters, and the views on sustainable developement and population. I love rephrasing things, and know this stuff, but reading them for school is sooo aaa uninspiring
I don't think school in itself motivates me at all. like studying removed the only card school ever had for me, the fear of not having done your homework.
