Mm good point.. I hardly follow patterns honestly. 

I have so many patches of 5x5 just testing.

Man, I can't imagine not following a pattern, that is courage.
I have a few gauge swatches, they're very cute I should do something with them one day.

I haven't been that experimental yet to be fair. I made one thing with pattern with was a plushie. Otherwise the things have been straight forward.
