I mean i only really use them to get new villagers. but there isa way too use some of the islands for something else. I know some people here clear them to make tarantula islands.

whats all that stuff about tarantulas? i keep seeing tarantulas mentioned but i dont understand why

Tarantulas and scorpions are a few of the most expensive insects to sell. It's why people are hoarding them and waiting for flick, as he pays you 150% of what the nooklings are paying.
Though since may, you now can catch tarantulas only on the southern hemisphere during nighttime (19pm to 7 am I think?) and scorpions on the northern hemisphere (same time as tarantulas).
When visiting a random island that doesn't have a specific spawn for critters set (some might just spawn insects on trees, some just big fish, some just insects in and on rocks), you can turn this island into a tarantula/scorpion island by removing every possible spawn for other insects (remove trees and rocks) and removing the weeds to make more spawn space for the desired insect. Of course it's not 100% efficient since they nerfed the insect spawn rate during the last big update, but it still works if you're patient. Just pay attention that you're visiting the island after 19pm or you might not get them to spawn ever (I've read somewhere the time won't change on the miles islands).

And to make a reference on your question about the effiency and worth of miles islands. During summer (northern hemisphere, in the next 7 months to come on the southern hemisphere) the big fish island might be a hoot. Many of the more expensive river fish are huge ones and they bring money galore (keep them for the insta beaver though, he too gives you 50% more than the nooklings do for fish). Also, during nighttime the tree spawning insect island might be of interest because of the huge moths and some of the summer insects that used to spawn on palm trees in NewLeaf. Many of these insects made it into the new game too and will have a similiar spawn. (I suspect that cutting down all the normal trees, planting weeds and bringing in a handfull of fully grown coconut plants might be the way to go to catch an inventory full of these - though research would need to be done on that part.)
There also is a tiny chance of getting an island that only has money rocks. 6 times 16.100 bells ... it's a handsome sum. But this island is freaking rare, so don't hold your breath for it.
Similiar when it comes to the bamboo island. If you don't have friends that can give you sprouts and don't shop at Daisy's little turnip stop every sunday for hefty sums, you'll need a bamboo island to get the plant. (They kind of act like trees and you get bamboo for crafting from them, so they definitely are worth it too. Though it's a shame they only ever get one sprout. So if you need sprouts to craft, either don't plant tne bamboo to keep or start selling your soul to Daisy Mae.)
