do try to build up a catalog
if you ever see items in the shop and you think "that looks nice, maybe this will come in handy one day..." buy it! chances are it will take ages until you'll be able to buy that item again
also, if you have friends, maybe plan a cataloging event with them to build up your catalog
as for the social bit... the way the game is made plus with the huge success it has had, there are a bunch of people who just have the game to capitalise on everything
so it has gotten a bit more difficult (imo) to find people to casually play with who don't just want you for the huge amount of bells, miles tickets or real cash you can give them
try to find a group of people (VP is a good start) that will help you achieve small goals in excahnge for your help to them. trade recipes you have doubles of, help each other finish the fossil collections, etc. Doesn't always have to be a 1:1 trade if you really like these people and trust them. There's a bunch of stuff people can help you with without it ending in this quite honestly dark side of the game.
So, hold on to doubles, catalogue what you can and try to get financially stable, so you don't have to wait months over months until you can finish smaller projects on your island
also, try to stock up on crafting materials whenever the mood strikes. at one point, I felt like wood was getting kinda low (as the trees rarely drop what you actually need, when you just try to farm when in need of stuff) and the whole tree ituation has the advantage, that you get a bunch of bells from chopping at them (plus 2 furniture items per day and a whole lot of wasps - be quick with that net and keep them for Flic! - and nests)

depends a bit on what your angle is
like, have you played any AC games before?
why do you play the game?
what are things you're potentially interested in the game?
