Everything resets daily though.

Just calculated it, you could get a total of 375 stubs by just doing the regular event. 
So yes ..either buy stubs or diamonds.

i'm spending diamonds.

usually on an event like this one i pick the set i like best, work toward it, then on the LAST day of the event, spend diamonds to complete which outfit i chose.

I think he wasn't expecting good music in a phone game.

What I did not expect was that I got so invested in the story. Like, I downloaded this to play dressup and ended up totally invested in the characters and storyline.
