Hello ofagedebatewise,
you are right. SinceI'm 18, I can now say that I'm now a lot more mature than I was at
16. By then I was a lot less critical towards everything compared to
what I’m now, and I’ve noticed that change in other people as
well. Being able to think critically is, to my mind, the most
important skill in voting. The candidates try to influence us and get
us to vote them. This is where we must start thinking critically. We
have to consider whether their promises and views are actually going
to work in the long run or not.
You said, that youngpeople are more likely to adopt their parents’ opinions or, on the
other hand, silly ideas when wanting to be rebellious. This is
because they haven’t fully developed their critical thinking yet.
Peer pressure is also quite serious at 16. Then it might affect one’s
political views as well, when they are not able to think critically
enough. Some people say that the voting age should be lowered,
because it’s important to know teenagers’ opinions as well when
they are also part of the society. But the problem is that their
opinions won’t be well-thought enough and therefore the result of
an election won’t necessarily reflect the society in the best way
possible. And the point of democracy is in fact that, for example,
the parliament represents the citizens.
To my mind, 18-year-olds are also quite young, so it's not necessary to lower the
voting age. Many 18-year-olds also go to school and live at home,
like the 16-year-olds. We 18-year-olds therefore can understand the
teenager world while also being more mature, which is a great
combination when it comes to voting. Of course, some adults can also
be immature, but it's much more common among teenagers. And for all
16-year-olds out there who cannot wait to vote, I just want to say
that two years is not a long time and it actually has a great effect
on ones growth as a person.
