I've never had an issue just washing the comforter.
I guess if I had like, a big ol king sized bed I may have to use the machines at the laundromat (which almost all laundromats have extra large machines for bedding)

The filling in a comforter can be washed just fine.
It's just polyester filling

I've had comforters get like that but it took a very long time.

there's stitching that holds the filling in place so that doesn't happen.
